The first adventure of this NEW YORK TIMES best-selling porcine wonder is now available as an e-book. (Ages 6 - 8)

To Mr. and Mrs. Watson, Mercy is not just a pig – she's a porcine wonder. And to the portly and good-natured Mercy, the Watsons are an excellent source of buttered toast, not to mention that buttery-toasty feeling she gets when she snuggles into bed with them. This is not, however, so good for the Watsons' bed. BOOM! CRACK! As the bed and its occupants slowly sink through the floor, Mercy escapes in a flash – "to alert the fire department," her owners assure themselves. But could Mercy possibly have another emergency in mind – like a sudden craving for their neighbors' sugar cookies? Welcome to the wry and endearing world of Mercy Watson – an ebullient new character for early chapter-book readers in a series that's destined to be a classic.

Read the adorable series by America's beloved storyteller Kate DiCamillo! The instant New York Times bestseller! In a delightful origin story for the star of the Mercy Watson series, a tiny piglet brings love (and chaos) to Deckawoo Drive — and the Watsons’ lives will never be the same. To Mr. and Mrs. Watson, Mercy is not just a pig — she's a porcine wonder. And to Mercy, the Watsons are an excellent source of buttered toast, not to mention that buttery-toasty feeling she gets when she snuggles into bed with them. One day the Watsons' car ride takes an unexpected turn when their elderly neighbor Baby Lincoln pops up in the backseat in hopes of some "folly and adventure" — and in the chaos that ensues, an exuberant Mercy ends up behind the wheel! Leroy Ninker is a small man with a big dream: he wants to be a cowboy, but for now he's just a thief. In fact, Leroy is robbing the Watsons' kitchen right this minute! Little does he know that Mercy is stirring from sleep. When the Watsons decide to zip their porcine wonder into a formfitting princess dress for Halloween — complete with tiara — they are certain that Mercy will be beautiful beyond compare. Return for a tale full of treats, tricky turns, and high humor.

Mercy's appetite has got her into trouble again. When Eugenia Lincoln's pansies go missing, Animal Control Officer Francine Poulet arrives on the scene. But as she soon discovers, not just anyone can think like a pig - especially Mercy Watson! Some may find it wonky to take a pig to the drive-in. But not the Watsons, who think the movie’s title, When Pigs Fly, is inspirational. And not Mercy, who is inspired by the theater’s Bottomless Buckets of popcorn. Tune in for the latest adventure! When Stella gets the idea to go caroling, she has a little trouble getting someone to join her. Will Stella need to sing by herself, or does the evening hold a miracle Stella hadn’t expected? Perfect for read aloud, and a Mercy ornament is included! Read the first book in Kate DiCamillo's new warm and funny early-reader trilogy about Orris the kind rat and Timble the naive owl — and the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Ideal for Mercy and Deckawoo fans!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–Mercy Watson, a disarmingly charming pig adopted by a loving human family, makes her debut in this new series of chapter books for beginning readers. After the Watsons tuck Mercy into bed with a sweet song and a kiss, she feels warm inside, as if she has just eaten hot toast with a great deal of butter on it. However, afraid of the dark, she snuggles into bed with the couple. Moments later, all three are rudely awakened from their lovely dreams with a BOOM! as their bed falls into a hole that has opened in the floor beneath them. In hot pursuit of buttered toast, the porcine wonder inadvertently gets help and saves the day. Along the way, she causes great, humorous distress to the next-door Lincoln sisters. Van Dusen's bright gouache illustrations have a jovial exaggerated style and capture the sometimes frantic action and silliness of Mercy's heroic escapade.–Lee Bock, Glenbrook Elementary School, Pulaski, WI

From Booklist

*Starred Review* PreS-Gr. 2. Oh, Mercy, what a pig! Mercy is a fat little porker, a beloved member of the Watson family. When Mr and Mrs. Watson sing her a happy morning song, she feels as warm inside as buttered toast. But when the lights go off, Mercy is so scared she gets in bed with the Watsons. The bed breaks under the weight, which leads to a series of hysterical events. The Watsons think Mercy is on the way to call the fire department, when, in fact, she wants to see if next-door neighbor Baby Lincoln has any buttered toast. After another misunderstanding and a merry chase, the firemen arrive--just in time to rescue the Watsons, who are about to fall through the floor. Mercy is a heroine (to the Watsons, at least), resulting in more songs and towers of toast. Appropriate as both a picture book and a beginning reader, this joyful story combines familiar elements (the unexpected heroine, the mean neighbor) with a raucous telling that lets readers in on the joke. Van Dusen's artwork is also spot-on. The gouache illustrations are polished to a sheen and have plenty of heft. The characters are exaggerated with a vintage cartoon flair; Mercy, for instance, looks like a piggy bank that has sprung to life. Another jolly adventure about Mercy is in the works. Ilene Cooper

We’ve had this book for 3 days and have read it too many times to count! My 5, 4, and 2 year old love it and even our 9 month old can enjoy the pictures so it’s a definite winner to entertain a wide age range! My 4 year old cracks up at the humor in it and my 5 year old has expanded his vocabulary a bit (he loves words!) and the 2 year old loves hearing the different accents I give to the characters. We’ll probably invest in the rest of the series at some point but we’ll enjoy this one for awhile first. Personally I think an 8 year old would be a little bored with it but maybe it’s because we do a lot of reading so I feel like our kids will outgrow this at a younger age but time will tell.

Our class just finished reading the entire Mercy Watson series. We love these books! Even though Mercy is mischievous, Mr. and Mrs. Watson love her and care for her like a kid. They sing her to sleep and feed her hot buttered toast - her favorite! The characters are very funny. New characters are introduced in each book. The colorful and detailed illustrations help us understand the story. These books are really funny and make us laugh. We would definitely recommend the Mercy Watson books to our friends and family.

First Graders LOVE this series. I'm using the first book in the series in a small group of high readers as a novel study. Otherwise I read aloud all the books over the course of the year and we have a Mercy Watson party one day during the last month of school.

I bought this book for my three year old- we read her stories every night. I was surprised by how much she liked it. She always asks us to keep going. It is a very early chapter book but simple story, can be ready through quickly, and it has pictures, which keep her interested. We liked it so much we bought another copy for my 5 year old niece who is reading on her own, and her mom told me that she was trying to read it by herself and enjoyed it as well.

OK. Mercy, the pig is afraid to sleep in her own bed in her own room. Guess no one ever told her she SHOULD be sleeping alone outside. However, I think she might have preferred that unless there was no moon. You see, Mercy wasn't afraid of being alone. She was afraid of the dark. Her Momma and Poppa should have bought a nightlife and avoided what happened in the middle of the night.

You'll have to read the story to discover why the fire department was called and what they did to actually be of help. Of course THEY weren't the ones that were deemed heroes. No, that would have been Mercy, and she was the reason there was trouble in the neighborhood.

Cute story. Cute pig. Nutty couple. Wild chase. Great illustrations. Yep, I'd say kids will love it!

I have two children that are two and three. Wrangling them and holding their attention isn’t easy, but these are easy to read and have colorful, fun illustrations that they really love. We have tried some other books that have not gone over well, especially since they’re in different places academically, but this is the first book they have sat all the way through and wanted to read again. We actually purchased more in the series that are all equally as entertaining and we read them almost every day. If you’re trying to transition from board books to something more advanced this is an excellent option. I hope you love them as much as we do!

Absolutely great introduction to chapter read alouds for young children. I've been reading this series to my toddler every night and I often have to cut her off after 2 chapters while she yells "Just one more chapter!". There are plenty of pictures, so a great transition from picture books and the story lines are easy enough for the young ones to recall yesterday's chapter the next day. Fun, quirky stories that are pretty grounded in reality.
