Synopsis: Mystery, murder, and marriage make a deadly combo in this clever mystery series.

Tanja Shepherd is a smart but slightly neurotic ex-FBI profiler. Her husband Joe is a rugged but somewhat broken ex-cop. Together they share the struggles of running a detective agency, maintaining a solid marriage, and raising a baby. The results may be funny, suspenseful, romantic, and sometimes frightening—but they always end with a surprising twist.

In book one, the Shepherds take on a cold case hoping to make a quick buck and pay some bills. With a baby on the way, they need every penny they can get. Their investigation into the mysterious death of a murdered teen deepens when they learn she wasn't alone: There was a second victim. Worse yet, the trail of bodies may go back decades, and the killer is still on the loose. As the bodies pile up, so does the danger. Someone knows what they're up to and will do anything to stop them - even if it means killing again. The Shepherds are starting to wonder if they should have taken this case. Unfortunately, it's too late now...

This is one of the most straightforward murder mystery novels I've read in a long time. Everything works. There aren't any obviously made-up awkwardness. The story simply flows.
A VERY GOOD READ!!!

Joe was a cop and Tajan was a FBI Agent, deciding to become PI. The sheriff wants to help them out, and also closure on cold cases. With a house they might lose, and wanting work, they go at it. Too many questions has gotten someone nervous and they become targets. With new clues, are they on the right track. Interesting of how this dialog was written.

This story grabbed me from the very beginning and would not let me go. It's been a long time since I've picked up a book and read straight through. The couple have a realistic relationship. The husband has been through some very rough things, but is working to get himself right. The wife has great wisdom in dealing with people, partially due to FBI training.
All of the characters are well developed and interesting people.
The story keeps moving inexorably and logically - although the logic is only obvious looking back. The author gives the reader all the clues, but it's not easy to figure out.
A really good read.

The series has promise. This book had a good story line, but the main characters were, to me, somewhat inconsistent as far as the relationship went. Too many over the top adjectives and pronouns especially in during the meat of the story. They are seasoned law personnel, but leave a chapter with a questionable character with 'don't leave town'. With her background in the FBI and her profiling abilities, I'd have thought a call to the sheriff would be made saying 'keep an eye on him, we think he might run'. Not knowing the gender of the writer before reading, I'm thinking the labor part was either overdone or not researched thoroughly. Again, too many adjectives when less is more.

Joe and Tanya are private detectives working to start their new business. Tanya is nearing her due date for the baby, but still is trying to track down a murderer. Secrets between husband and wife adds to the drama. I enjoyed reading this book.

What happens when a former FBI lady, and a former undercover cop merge their lives in marriage and
working as PIs? This book shows Joe and Tanja solving a five year old cold case, and establishing their abilities and
reputations. Their respective backgrounds and abilities compliment each other, making them good partners.
I thought it was and interesting story with strong characters, who could carry a series.

Joe and Tanya make for an interesting married couple and partners in a nascent detective agency. With a baby arriving any day and money in short supply, they take on their first case. They’ll get paid if they solve a cold murder case. The story leads us to know them as they struggle with their relationship and finding the murder.

Great story and it was well told. I enjoyed the story and found it hard to put down overnight.

A well written great story that's filled with suspense. I enjoyed it. The main characters and support characters are well developed and it's easy to like them and cheer for them. I'd certainly be interested in a continuation of another mystery solved by these two.

4.0 out of 5 stars There's nothing cozy about it!

I'm surprised that this has been descibed as a 'cozy mystery novel' because it is nothing like one. It is gritty and fairly violent in places and explores areas that are very far from cozy. Without spoiling the plot, I feel the story became a little far-fetched towards the end, but apart from that, I enjoyed it.
