Murder and Brandy Boy: A Liz Lucas Cozy Mystery Series Book 2 Kindle Edition
Liz Lucas, the owner of the Red Cedar Spa, hires an intern to help her prepare family style meals served to guests at the lodge. Only days before graduation, his car crashes over a cliff and into the ocean. Was it suicide or murder?
Liz, along with her trusty dog, Winston, sets out to find the killer. Was it the high school computer genius, Nerdy Birdie? Brent, who was going to Stanford on a football scholarship? Kaitlin, the quarterback's girlfriend? Clamhammer, the gangster from San Francisco's Chinatown? Or Nerdy's mother, the president of the Women Whose Husbands Left Them Club?
Who would have thought Brandy Boy, the lovable but lazy St. Bernard who's the mascot of the Red Cedar Spa, would become a nationally recognized hero?

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2015Another great read by this prolific author with two bestselling cozy mystery series. It's a good thing the books are quick reads or I couldn't keep up. That would be too bad because I'd be missing out on an entertaining story with wonderful characters and settings--food and animals, too! Liz Lucas is a great amateur detective, thank goodness, with the bumbling Chief of Police, Seth Williams, as the official investigator. When her Cedar High School intern dies in a car wreck Liz wonders if it really was an accident--or a teen suicide as Williams suggests! Mark had a secret--did that get him killed? Liz picks up the ball dropped by the unlikable Chief of Police and runs with it. Soon the suspects and clues mount and so does the suspense as Liz seeks the truth in her effort to get justice for her intern Mark. All in all a great second book in this new series...great recipes tagged on at the end and let's not forget the lovable Saint Bernard, Brandy Boy, and Liz's devoted canine companion, Winston. Great fun!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2022A good, solid whodunit. Mark Scott, an intern cook at the Red Cedar Spa, run by Liz Lucas, dies when his car goes off a cliff on his way home. The chief of police seems to hold his position so that the community won't be pestered by a competent police organization. So, it's up to Liz to bring the guilty parties to justice. As the case progresses, the list of suspects continues to grow. Aside from Mark's demise, the story comes to a satisfying end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2015This is the second in the Liz Lucas series, and it looks like I will be following this series for quite a while. I have already bought the third, and eagerly look forward to more of Liz, Brandy Boy, and Winston.
This is a wonderful quick read. Liz is living in the forests of California, and is the proprietor of her Red Cedar Spa. It is quickly gaining an excellent reputation, and things are looking up when one of her interns is murdered. Since the local authority is an inept police chief, Liz steps into the void to solve the mystery.
The storyline provides numerous red herrings, and suspects, and a satisfying conclusion. While the book can easily stand on its own, I would recommend reading the series in order. Small details make much more sense with the background of the previous book. This is a wonderful book to curl up and read and would fit into an afternoon at the beach, a fall day on the deck, or in front of the fireplace on a cold winter's day
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2015When her high school intern dies in a car wreck after leaving work, Liz feels compelled to figure out what happened. The disgusting chief of police sure isn't interested; he even gives Liz permission to investigate!
After overhearing a conversation at the funeral Liz can't help connecting the death to another but much lesser crime that is being kept under covers. If she is right that still doesn't limit the suspect pool to a very small group and doesn't help her get any closer to finding the answer, much less proving it.
Brandy Boy, Winston, and Roger all help move the story along and make it more personal while Brandy Boy adds a bit of humor to lighten a dark time for Liz and Roger provides both knowledge and support for the spa owner as she works through the maze hints and bits of information that she follows to find look for clues.
I won this book from the author, who provided a gift card for the novel, in a drawing on Facebook. It is the first of her books that I have read but it will not be the last.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2021Murder and Brandy Boy is a simple, clean cozy mystery revolving around a murdered high school senior who’s death may have been related to some grades being changed. This book was originally published in 2015, and it lacks the depth and quality of the author’s more recent work, but it is still a fun although somewhat tragic story.
The narrator speaks clearly and is easy to understand, but her reading does not do the story any favors. I sped her narration up a little as she talked rather slowly.
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. This is my honest and voluntary review.

In this latest Liz Lucas mystery, we find Liz hired high school intern to help with her meals preparation suddenly dies from a car accident after leaving her spa. The local bumbling sheriff thinks it is just another teenage suicide but further investigation it is found that the care brakes has been tampered.
Liz is suspicious since she knows her intern was hiding a secret as he almost told her while they were prepping food. Could the secret be the real reason why he was killed or was it something else and what was the secret that bothered him?
As the secret is somewhat leaked, the endless possibilities of suspects grows. Who had the most to gain and lose if the secret was known? It is up to Liz to find out the real killer before she becomes the next victim and Brandy Boy to come to the rescue.
Another winner by Dianne Harman as the story quickly flows.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2015I really enjoyed this second book in the new Liz Lucas Cozy Mystery series. Good plot, great characters and story. Love the dogs and the recipes are an added plus.
As the story unfolds you get to know the characters and Liz is right in the middle of another murder. This time it is her summer intern, a really nice kid with a lot going for him. Lots of suspects that have to be whittled down to find the motive and murderer. Dianne always has some weird, quirky people in her books that go along with her other very likable ones. Looking forward to future installments to see if Roger runs against the awful and incompetent chief of police. I'm sure he won't go down without a fight! Another great read that has you waiting for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful summer read
Often when a reader encounters a whodunit the tale involves some high-stakes motive for the ghastly deeds at the centre of the tale, yet far more murders, perhaps the ones that don’t make it to the news bulletins because of their lack of spectacularity or celebrity status, are rather down-to-earth affairs affecting everyday people. This approach was the theme of a successful, long-running TV series a few years ago, ‘Murder She Wrote’. When I was reading Dianne Harman’ ‘Murder and Brandy Boy’ I kept flashing back to that superb series. The novel, a classic low-key murder mystery in the style of Agatha Christie, has the same comfortable feel to it. The locations and the people are so well crafted they could be your neighbours or the street down the road. The novel’s subtitle refers to a ‘Cozy Mystery’ and it certainly lives up to this promise.
The author’s style is simple and direct, allowing peeks into the protagonist’s internal monologue occasionally to give depth to the narrative. The clues to the solution are presented to the reader at the same time as the protagonist, almost as a challenge to solve the murder before she does. The pace is well controlled throughout so the easy flow of the tale. A wonderful summer read. Recommended.
