He carries an assassin’s nickname. But now this Pinkerton is the North’s last chance to keep its gold…

Missouri, 1862. Rob “Longshot” Finn knows his grief won’t bring his wife back from the grave. Determined to put the tragedy behind him, he heads to St. Louis to set up a new Pinkerton operation. Under pressure to secure the Union’s vital war funding, Longshot travels the trail West with none other than a young Buffalo Bill.

Battling unfamiliar terrain and savage predators, Longshot and his band discover the wild frontier doesn’t play by the rules. And with liars and spies working for both sides of the war, even Longshot’s unwavering belief in his government begins to falter…

Can he protect his principles, safeguard the gold, and keep his name off a fresh tombstone?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Keith R. Baker in Longshot in Missouri tells a Civil War story from a fresh perspective that will leave the reader wanting more." James D Best, Best-selling author of the Steve Dancy novels.

Other readers of the first book in this series, LONGSHOT in MISSOURI, have commented:

* "The author has a special talent for creating a clear picture, but also allows us to use our imagination and become more personally involved in a way that so few authors do today."

* "I was impressed that the story was told in such a way that I felt like I knew the characters personally. The book was refreshingly without vulgarity or unnecessary sex."

* "I really liked the character of Rob Finn. Not your usual assassin in that he has feelings. He definitely isn't a cold blooded killer. He has a conscience. And even though he is a farmer by trade, he is smart and learns from each experience and person he meets."

My mother was born in Rosebud, Montana in 1915. My grandparents were homesteaders. In 1918 they traveled to N.D. to visit grandma's parents and grandpa contracted the flu and died. They remained there and grandma met and married the only maternal grandpa I ever knew. A wonderful man. Four more children joined the family but there was never any yours or mine, they were ours.
My original grandpa was from Mt. Pleasant, Pa.
In 1934 my mother traveled to Pa to visit her grandparents and met the man who would be my father. This was in April. In August he traveled to Edgeley, N.D. and they traveled to Aberdeen, S.D. and were married, returning to Pa via the World's fair in Chicago, IL. But I digress.
I totally enjoyed Longshot into the West. The characters are believable. The history and geography are believable. The family involvement coupled with their short comings lend believability once again.
I look forward to reading the next book as well as the novelette, "Bridget".
Thank you Keith for a very enjoyable night spent reading this book to the end. Well worth a few yawns the following day.
You have a fan in me.

I enjoyed the first book in the Long shot series, but due to some of the negative reviews, I almost didn't read this second book. While not nearly as exciting or action filled as the first book, it nonetheless gives the reader some idea of life in the Northwest during the Civil War. Long shot has given up his work as an assassin, but still works undercover for Pinkerton. The bulk of the book is a bout his travels to what is now Washington state, and the people who travel with him or whom he meets along the way. It's a short book so it doesn't take long to read. My two complaints about this book are that one, Longshot continues to survive incidents that would prove fatal to most in those days, and two, for someone supposedly undercover to spy on Southern sympathizers, Long shot is quick to trust people he has just met and tells them his mission. That began to grate by the end of the book. As with book one, the story is complete, although reading book one gives you more background into Longshot's and other ongoing characters. While I did enjoy this book, I missed the action and suspense from the first book. Not sure I will continue this series.

This was a nice little book to read. It had a mixture of action and geographical movement along with some interesting historical notes. It's not often one hears about the Knights of the Golden Circle, so that was a plus for me. The first time I ran across the KGC was in a novel by Ernest Haycox called Long Storm many years ago.

Rob Finn, aka Longshot, is a Pinkerton and a spy for the Union, but he is not happy with the gov't and struggles with the real motives of the war. Well, who really trusts the gov't anyway? They were no better then albeit their size and reach was much smaller.

The book flows nicely and is an easy read. There is some attempt to portray character through language in the dialogue. "Them other two fellers know it too, cuz they showed their badges." You get the idea. There isn't much character growth, but the history and geography are pretty accurate and part of the fun anyway. The Indians were a nice addition, and their medical skills were of interest. His sidekick is a mulatto albeit he appears to be rather black in color. His backstory is given almost at the very end.

If you like a quick read, pick this one up. It is #2 in a series of 3, and I haven't read either of the others, but the book stands on its own just fine.

There isn't a lot of action in this book. I think reading the character development was good but I thought the mission to ferret out the rebels out West was lacking. The journey to get to the gold mines was interesting but once there the story died a little. This book did make me want to read Book one. There are people from that book in this one I would like to learn more of. I think all in all it is a good book The author does a very good job with his characters and his descriptions of the western landscape is very good.

I enjoyed this book, especially all the history that was included. For the most part well written despite the several typos I ran across-which should have been found before publishing.
I felt that the first book was better written.. This was really good until the last chapter and the epilogue for me. it was like the author had more to tell us to pull the story together but he was either on a time line to get the book finished, or just got it finished to finish.
I felt dissappointed in the author somehow the way those last pages were written. Other than that, I enjoyed the stories in the two books

I like the first book in this series, and I liked this one even more. The adventures with the Indians in the West, the dangers the main character encountered, the family issues -- there is a lot happening, and as a retired history teacher, I can tell you that it is historically accurate and Keith Baker never strays from the Civil War Era.
This is a great read for those who like the 1860s, the West, and Indian lore, as well as the excitement created by the perils of being a government agent undercover during wartime.
Another fine installment in a great series.

This is our second visit with "Longshot" and it is another quick and fun romp, this time to the goldfields of southwestern Montana. The characters are finely drawn, the dialog is believable, and the settings are great. I'm sure my own enjoyment was enhanced by familiarity with these settings but they are nicely backdated to support the story. It is also fun that improbable historical characters pop up in very probable ways. Henry Plummer, especially, gets a markedly different treatment than local history would have. Perhaps an enticement into the next tale? These are fun reads. Hurry with the next one Keith, but do so with your proper sense of the history intact!
