★ #3 in the Amazon Free Store! ★

Suddenly, I was a bachelor in an unfamiliar town with a money pit of a house, a truck that wouldn’t run, and a new job. Yet, all could think about was Mutt, or at least that’s what they called her.To me, she was gorgeous and witty ... and perfect. She knew more duty than desire, more perseverance than passion, and more acquaintance than affection, but here was no way I’d ever want to change her. In fact, I was dying to show her the life she'd been missing, but first she'd have to trust me enough to tell me her real name. I wanted to plant roots, but I refused to clip her wings. Not when she was everything I’d been looking for and all the home I’d ever need.Roots and Wings is a standalone contemporary romance. If you're looking for a good time, then you've come to the right place. Welcome to Wynne.

"Who knew small town romance could be so hot!?"--Meghan March, New York Times Best Belling Author

"Finally, a romance that doesn't have a billionaire, a domineering alpha male, rock star, or athletes. But instead M. Mabie treated her readers to a
REAL ROMANCE that is full of charm, sass, heart, and of course steam with good old fashioned characters that are flawed, realistic and relatable to readers."--Michelle, Four Chicks Flipping Pages Blog

"Simple,
swoon-worthy romance! No gimmicks, no clichés - just falling in love. I enjoyed every moment of it. If you're a fan of small town romances, I HIGHLY recommend this one."--Michelle, Goodreads Reviewer

"As the author mentioned in the blurb for this book, it was
"low on drama, high love." That was exactly what I was in the mood for. This was my first M. Mabie book, but I'm looking forward to reading more by her."--Jen, Goodreads Reviewer

"Roots and Wings gives you Mutt and Vaughn's
unforgettable, sweet, and heart melting story together as they look for those roots, push for those wings, and truly discover what love is all about."--The Never-Ending Book Basket

M. Mabie is the writer who made thousands of readers hate-to-love (and love-to-hate) the angst-filled contemporary romance, Bait.

Mabie lives in Illinois with her husband. She writes unconventional love stories and tries to embody "real-life romance." She uses the same fork at every meal, watches Wayne's World while cleaning, and lets her dog sleep on her head.

She has always been a writer. In fact, she was born with a pen in her hand, which almost never happens. Almost.

M. Mabie usually doesn't speak in third-person. She promises.

Roots and Wings is a southern, contemporary romantic comedy by M. Mabie. It’s set in the town of Wynne and showcases the small town life where everyone knows everyone and their business. It’s sweet and pure, at its finest. Sounds simple enough right? Well not exactly. Roots and Wings pulls emotions from you that you wouldn’t expect from the type of book without flash and circumstance or the dark storylines. It’s real life, real world, deep emotion and when written in a fictional story… that can be a powerful tool.

Roots and Wings focuses on the characters Mutt (nickname) and Vaughn. Mutt was born and raised in Wynne and Vaughn is the new guy in town. For a small town, a new resident is a big deal and the ladies in the supermarket shared their fill of gossip at the new dentists’ arrival.

Mutt is a tomboy who works in her dad’s shop, loves a cold beer after work, and spends her spare time fishing in all her favorite honey holes (My partner in crime, Dottie, says I need to explain this to the Yankees… A honey hole is like untouched waters, a great fishing spot people don’t know about. lol). She’s lived her whole life labeled by her nickname and maybe lost herself a little under the perspective of a town who has known her for her whole life. Vaughn’s arrival shakes things up within her personal life but also internally for Mutt.

"Quote" Should I tell him I hate broccoli? Was it too soon for that? S***. What was I thinking? Too soon for broccoli? "End Quote"

Roots and wings is sweet, charming, and innocent. It’s simple in terms of drama and chaos but rich with feelings and emotion. I teared up a couple of times at the level of depth captured in the development of the relationship between these two characters. I got choke up more than a few times on the way Vaughn wanted to do things right, the way he treated Mutt, and the level of concern and protection he had for her. Their chemistry was awesome and had elements of both friendship and love. Mutt’s journey from a girl smitten to a woman in love was relatable on levels that touch every emotion that women go through during those uncertain and often awkward moments of the beginning stages of dating.

"Quote" For the first time, I wanted to impress a man. Not because I wanted his business, or simply to warm my bed, but I wanted a man to desire me, and even if I hated to admit it, I wanted to be treated like I was special. Like I was beautiful.

And, there in that garage, he’d done just that.

I felt, more than anything, that he desired me. All of me. And I wanted more of it. "End Quote"

Her insecurities and desires hit a special place in my heart. You often hear woman in our community complaining about a whinny female lead (which I hate anyways because I’m not a fan of character bashing) but Mutt’s insecurities portray in a way that’s anything but sulky or bratty. She’s a real woman trying to navigate the missteps, lessons, and self-doubt that often arise when we are unsure of how someone else sees us or feels. Her story and history pulled at my heartstrings. The way people treated her and what become her normality was heartbreaking. They way Vaughn saw through the simple commonality of it was beautiful. He saw it for what it was… wrong.

"Quote" Men wanted someone delicate they could take care of and protect. They wanted someone who made them feel powerful and needed.

And I’d never be a woman who couldn’t take care of herself. A girl who couldn’t survive if left alone.

    I’d been left alone before.

That’s what stuck in my head. I never wanted to feel like I was left lost. Wandering around, needing someone else to save me.

I could save myself. "End Quote"

Vaughn is an ace of spades. He’s patient, protective, and quite the sweet talker when he wants to be (The type of sweet talker who is saying these things because he means them and not because it’s what she wants to hear.). Never thought you’d retire your rock stars for a dentist, did you? Well lets not get carried away we don’t have to completely retire our musicians, actors, or alpha bad boys but this dentist is a great addition to the mix of book boyfriends. He’s yearned for a life where he can put down roots in a town he would be proud to call home and that’s what brings him to Wynne and to Mutt.

"Quote" She was a woman who knew more duty than desire, more perseverance than passion, and more acquaintance than affection

I wanted to show her more. I wanted to be the man that could handle her strong will and headstrong ways. I wanted to be what she needed, what she wanted. "End Quote"

I received an ARC of Roots and Wings because I was interested when I first saw the beautiful cover and my interest was easily kept after the book description. I’ve read the Bait Series by M. Mabie and this story seemed so different from that series that I wanted to see how an author who caught me with one type of story could reel me in with something so different. I am beyond thrilled with the results and with Mabie’s diversity within her craft. Don’t put her in a box because from what I’ve seen she’ll easily smash her way out of it with her originality, fresh storylines, and characters that make you feel. Through the good, bad, and ugly she has a way to keep you hooked, keep you reading, and keep you invested. FIVE big stars for this small town story!

I'm just really getting into this M. Mabie chick and I have to say I think I'm addicted and now I want to read all the Mabie books!

I don't know what I was expecting with this one to be honest. It's been sitting on my kindle for quite awhile now and decided it was time. I was pleasantly surprise. I love that so far this author has been able to write such different stories and nail each one I have read.

This story is a fun, slow burn, small town, just all around good romance. Not a lot of drama which was nice and refreshing.

Mutt our lovely heroine is the epitome of everything I love to read in a heroine. She's real and although she's headstrong we get glimpses of a whole new girl underneath that rough exterior that most people have no idea is there. She's strong but vulnerable at just the right moments. Smart mouthed but sweet. Loving and caring toward those that deserve it and brushes off those that don't matter. Her development after meeting Vaugh was utter perfection. I'm not going to say much about Vaughn except he is pretty swoon worthy and by the end of this book we probably all wish we had a Vaughn in our lives.

All around a good solid story with a great plot. I love books that are just easy to read and don't have a lot of drama. It makes that slow burn between the characters so much more enjoyable and real

GUYS!!! I had a perma-smile throughout this book. I didn't want to quit it. I also, didn't want it to end. I am totes in LOVE with Roots and Wings; like MEGA MEGA in love with this book. I have to say this was the best slow burn, story I have ever read.

Small town love stories always get to me. I always feel like I connect better with the characters and their story, because I, myself, live in a small town. You know how the story goes, everyone knows everyone and all of their history. And in Roots and Wings, this is most certainly the case.

Our heroin, Mutt, is the local Tom-Boy, who works with her dad at their Mechanics shop and makes fishing lures. She was raised by her Dad and Grandfather, which helped her be a little rougher around the edges. But those edges of hers, are so smooth and speak volumes as to who she is. She doesn't take crap from anyone, but she also would give the clothes off her back to help anyone in need. She speaks her mind, but also loves with her all. There is also this side of vulnerability that peeks its head out, here and there. It shows that she is human, and shows that she craves what the next person does; a partner, lover, boyfriend, or whatever you want to call it. I loved getting into her head, and understanding her quirks. Mutt really was a breath of fresh air.

The hero, well he is another story. Mr. Astro himself aka Vaughn, was also a breath of fresh air. He is the new guy to this small town; which means everyone already "knew" his story before he stepped foot into his new house. See, he is the new Dentist. (And what a Dentist he is.) Actually, there is a part in this book where Mutt's dad calls him, Captain Cavity-I about cried myself silly when this took place. It is fitting, and a nice little joke. SO anyways, new guy in town, everyone "knows" him, but they don't, and he stands out in that sea of familiarity. Astro, as I will refer to him, is so easy going and so darn lovable. He came to this new town to have a fresh start. Make new friends and possibly find the love of his life.

Who loves insta-chemistry? I know I do!!! Roots and Wings brings that insta-chemistry. You can feel it all the way to your bones. It is breathtaking how Astro and Mutt connect. Throughout this story, we see two characters grow into so much and then some. What really made me fall even more in love with this story was how Astro allowed Mutt to move at her own pace. He didn't push her out of her comfort zone, but instead let her feel everything out. They have a relationship that took my breath away. It is built on a level of trust and understanding. It just really gave me all the feels. This is the type of story that I really crave, it is a needle in a haystack and it was perfection. I just really love love.

The overall feeling of this book was sweet and light. And when I say sweet, I don't mean like super sweet where you want to gag yourself and not finish the book. I mean the type of book where you just need a steady stream of sweet and light to make your heart soar. I love these types of books. I loved how it was packed with some serious wit, great banter, sexy times, but the ULTIMATE slow burn too. Slow burns are something I have grown to love and enjoy so much. They add depth and true meaning to what the heroin/hero share. It gives us more to a story. It allows us to feel each of the characters out, and really learn who they are.

I was wowed with Roots and Wings. This was such a well written story. And the characters, well they are pretty BA. I am sad to say that this is my very first M. Mabie book. I feel like I have been truly missing out on her awesome. I fell head over heels in love with Mutt and Astro. To know that Ms. Mabie writes with a mean punch to the heart, makes me want to kick myself for not reading her stories sooner. Seriously, guys, this book was gahhhhh so much more than I had hoped for. Oh and have you seen that cover---so gorgeous!! Another thing that I loved, was the alternating POVS, each chapter went back forth from Mutt and Astro!! Anyways, grab this book and eat it up. I can guarantee you will fall madly in love with everything that pertains to Mutt and Astro's story! Ps. I need more Mutt and Astro ASAP! <3 <3

This was a really good book, not because the story was exceptional, the action was "at the edge of your seat," but because the author was able to create characters that were so real and unique they actually flavored the writing with dynamic ambiance. It happens now and then, but it really is rare.

A girl named Mutt, a dentist, and a small town. What more could two people have in common.

I loved Vaughn he was such an understated alpha male he was protective of O'Fallon/Mutt from the begining, without being ott, even when she didn't realise she needed it. It was a refreshing change to read a simple love story, as it says low on drama high on love. You simply get exactly what it says, well worth a read.
