A Measure of Trouble (Alex Warren Murder Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 1,540 ratings

A cold February morning in Scotland begins with the discovery of a body, as Hector Mathewson is found dead within the cask room of his own distillery.

While directing the hunt for the murderer, D.C.I. Alex Warren needs to balance his own turbulent personal life. Their plentiful suspects have motives ranging from greed and nationalism to adultery and revenge.

A Measure of Trouble is a gripping tartan noir thriller set in Glasgow. This is a standalone mystery and can be enjoyed even if you haven't read other books in the series.

Praise from readers:

- Great dialogue, unique plot and clever humour. A Measure of Trouble is a book with such a generous helping of twists that make for a total page turner
- Until Zach came around, I never actually read a mystery before. I'm so happy that my introduction to this genre was by this talented author
- Abrams has a wonderful capacity to bring readers into the personal lives of Alex and Sandra, who are full-blooded and sympathetic characters struggling with issues
- This novel is well written, well-structured and, what I really enjoyed about it, the plot develops on several levels and the characters and events are frequently presented with a dry sense of humour, which makes it hard to put this novel down

About the Author

After a successful career in business and finance, Zach Abrams has relatively recently started writing fiction. His first novel 'Ring Fenced' was published in November 2011 and this is a crime story with a difference as the underlying theme is obsession tinged with power, control and how they are used and abused. This novel was followed by a collaboration with Elly Grant to produce 'Twists and Turns' a book of short stories and flash fiction. Zach's second novel 'Made a Killing' was the first of a series of Alex Warren murder mysteries (published in November 2012) and this has been followed by 'A Measure of Trouble' (August 2013). Zach is currently working on a novel based on investigative jounalism. Alike his central character in 'Ring Fenced,' (Bemjamin Short), Zach Abrams grew up within an orthodox Jewish family. He completed his education in Scotland and went on to a career in business and finance. He is married with two children. He plays no instruments and has an eclectic taste in music, although not as obsessive as Benjamin. Unlike Benjamin, he does not maintain mistresses, write pornography and (sadly) he does not have ownership of such a wealthy company. He is not a sociopath (at least by his own reckoning) and all versions of his life are aware of and freely communicate with each other. More in keeping with Alex Warren, he and his family reside in the south side of Glasgow. To contact the author send email to: zachabrams@authorway.net

This is an excellently done story which has a bit of a surprise ending. That is why I say READ, aside from the fact it is entertaining, provides a great pass time, and teaches you something every time you pick up a book. The characters spill over from a previous book so you have an acquaintance with them, but as usual they are excellently drawn, humanized so you almost believe them to be real. The story is impeccably constructed with lots of red herrings. I thoroughly enjoyed this second of the Zach Abrams books I have read and I am sure you will as well. Five stars with no reservations.

The story reads well enough. The characters are very well drawn. As other reviewers have noted, there is occasionally too much detail on matters of no consequence. (I skimmed through 2 pages on sports.) The conclusion wraps up suddenly; you're reading along, and the investigation is following its course . . . and then, bam, case is solved! That's okay. There are a number of typos and misspellings (should be stationery, not stationary) and missing punctuation, or a quotation mark that wasn't supposed to be there. Two chapters ended abruptly, without any transition. As if you took a page and just randomly picked the end of one sentence, and stopped the chapter there. But, those are editorial issues. The story, and the characters, are good enough. I can see Alex Warren as a recurring character. All good - except one point. (Minor plot spoiler here!) There is an office romance. They have kept it secret up to now, but need to address the issue before it gets out. A boss cannot be dating his subordinate. To deal with the issue, the woman (who has her own career and future to consider) is the one to volunteer to just take another, less desirable position in another location. That's a dated, sexist concept. She automatically disrupts her life and career to accommodate his. A female author might've handled that differently, or at least brought that conversation into the story.

One sexual passage that might be surprising pops up not my cup of tea. Other than that this story is a fast moving crime mystery you won't be able to put down.

Alex got a call a man dead at the distillery, one look and knew it was murder. The motives were many, he planned on selling the family busines, was a womanizer, greed, and maybe even revenge played into this interesting plot. Enjoyable to follow the twists to figure out who, and how Alex and Sandra are doing.

The mystery moves along well with all the characters and their relationships well defined with smooth storytelling. Having lived in England for over three years, and being familiar with American business terminology, I was comfortable with the narrative and dialogue. Some American readers might have to look to context for meaning at times, but the storyline flow will carry them on. The combination of good storyline and detective work, along with the love interest makes the reader eager to return to the story after any breaks. The editing was excellent with very few spelling or grammatical errors (and I don't mean differences between King 's English and American English)
