About the author
Justine Davis was born during an Iowa blizzard. In response, she’s been a West Coaster since before she was a year old, and intends to stay that way. She has a history of staying, starting her first full time job right out of school—
“Excuse me? There was that brief sojourn at a concrete plant where they made, among other things, burial vaults. The reasons for and mechanics of which I could have gone my entire life without knowing.”
Ew. Yes. May we proceed now? Where were we? Ah, staying. Justine spent 21 years at that first job. Was married to her first and only husband also for 21 years. Lived in their first house for 17 years. Has lived in her current house in the Pacific Northwest for 12. Is it dedication, inertia, laziness, or—
“Laziness?? Do you have any idea how much junk you accumulate in that amount of time? How many dumpsters we filled moving? Think I want to do that again? Not a chance.”
Right. Now then. You’ve had two lengthy careers. Again, dedication, inertia, or laziness?
“Laziness again? You try working two full time jobs. Graveyard shift at the PD. Home and to bed by 9AM. Up at 2PM. (yes, that’s five hours sleep) Write until 9PM. Get ready for night job. Lather, rinse, repeat. For six years, I did both. Hmpf. Lazy indeed.”
All right, all right, no need to get snarky. So, which job did/do you hate more?
“Sheesh. Neither. I’ve been wonderfully fortunate to have two jobs I’ve loved. Some people never get one. My time in law enforcement was many things, exciting, nerve wracking, and irritating, but most importantly never, ever boring. It was fascinating enough that I didn’t think about writing seriously for several years. I kept a journal, and wrote long letters, collected quotes, mentally rewrote movies and TV shows, and still made up those stories in my head, but never dreamed of actually writing for publication. I was having too much fun helping to catch bad guys, and being continually amazed at the situations people get themselves into. And eventually I walked away with a wealth of background and story ideas, and knowing some truly great people who work very hard to keep all of us safe. I’m proud to have been one of them.
But writing is my life now. It’s the greatest joy I have, to tell the stories that live in my head. (not to mention clearing out some of these people—they say writer’s block is when your imaginary friends won’t talk to you. Mine never shut up!) ”
Has your writing career gone as planned?
“Um...plan? The extent of my plan was I wanted to sell a book by the time I was 30. I didn’t quite make it, but it was close enough. After that, it was all pretty much seat of the pants stuff. I know writers who have actual plans, X books in X number of years, be on radio or TV by book number X, hit the USA today list by book X, then the NYT list by book number X. While I’ve done all of those except for the last, it certainly hasn’t been because I planned it that way.”
And now, the official stats:
Justine Dare Davis sold her first book after meeting her editor in the line for the ladies room at a conference. And no, she didn’t commit the great faux paux of pitching it there; the book was never mentioned in the conversation, which centered mostly on horses. Her first four books were published in 1991, and she saw all reach the finals for either the Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award or the Romance Writers of America prestigious RITA Award. She has since won the RITA award four times, along with several Reviewer’s Choice and Career Achievement awards. Justine has also been inducted into the RWA Hall of Fame, making her one of a very select group of writers. She had four titles on the RT "Top 200 of All Time" list, and her sales now total more than 60 books. She has been featured in several local newspapers and nationwide by Associated Press, has appeared on CNN, and on two episodes of a cable television series on romance. She has given workshops for many chapters of RWA, has spoken at several regional and international conferences and has taught at the UCLA Writer’s Program. She is also featured in North American Romance Writers, an academic reference on the romance genre.
Her limited free time is spent reading, knitting (often simultaneously), and on photography, trying to catch the perfect shot of the bald eagles, deer, bear, raccoons and blue herons near her home. In the summer she can usually be found driving her restored 1967 Corvette Roadster—top down, of course—with her beloved dog as passenger.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2017This was just one of those exceptional reads that touch you heart and soul. How could you not love the characters given who they were and what made them that way? Kelsey was so kind and compassionate whether her latest rescue was horse or human. The way she pulled and tugged at Declan, getting him to open up and reveal all that lay inside of him was no easy task but, like with her horses, she didn't give up. And Declan, who'd been horribly abused and had hidden himself away from the world, so needed what Kelsey had to offer. Little by little she coaxed him out of the darkness and into the light. The way their love story unfolds is a thing of beauty.
This story touched me on so many levels as I had a brother who reminded me of Declan. He wasn't abused but was isolated by a disease that kept him alone, without anyone but family most of the time. What little social life he enjoyed was made extra special because of his circumstances. Only he never had the fortune of finding his Kelsey like Declan did. I'm sighing just thinking about it.
Anyway, Kelsey lives on property she doesn't own thanks to the kindness of one of the town's people. She lives in a small cabin that's quite primitive and often goes without the necessities in life in order to make sure her rescue horses are well taken care of. When she learns the property has been sold because the owner needs to retire she understands, but when they start bulldozing her cabin without warning she's ready to panic at the thought of the Whiskey River Rescue having to relocate. She doesn't care about herself, she can sleep anywhere, but the horses are another matter entirely. When she discovers the neighbor next door is the one who bought the property, she goes storming over there to confront him.
Declan is well aware of the fact most of the town's residents think he's crazy. He never goes anywhere, has everything he needs delivered while he secludes himself in his home that resembles a castle. When Kelsey shows up at his door he's more than a little gruff with her but he doesn't want her invading his space. When she mistakes him for the gardner and demands to meet his boss, Declan doesn't correct her assumption, just makes her think "the boss" is unavailable. And thus their relationship begins.
It's a stormy one at first but the more Declan encounters Kelsey, the more he wants to be around her. She intrigues him, challenges him at every turn, and yes, there's an attraction there as well. When Kelsey finds out Declan's having a house built for her, in place of her old cabin, and then provides her with a beautiful trailer to live in until the house is finished, she can't believe it. On top of that, he intends to donate to Whiskey River Rescue in order to keep her horses safe. She'll no longer have to struggle to make ends meet. She's overwhelmed by his kindness and is determined to thank him even if it does mean invading the man's privacy. Just like with her horses, she's now on a mission to rescue Declan.
I can't say enough about this story. Yes, I've read others similar but this one really struck a chord in me. I hated to see it end. I definitely recommend it and I'm most assuredly going to look into other work by the author. Big thumbs up!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2019I loved this book from beginning to end. I enjoyed the characters & the author's amazingly detailed style. I don't normally give too many books 5 stars, but this book hit it out of the ballpark.
I won't spoil the story, but I will say that this author provides a romantic, heartfelt, emotional journey in which you actually watch two characters fall in love...and I don't mean that instant, superficial love that you see so much of these days when it comes to romance novels--but actual "show, don't tell, " in depth, real love.
I appreciate the author's attention to detail, brutal honesty, and true talent in telling a story that made me thank my mother for being who she is to me. If you're wondering what I'm talking about, buy this book. You won't regret it.
Thank you, Ms. Davis, for this magnificent book.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2017I wondered a bit: 3,5 or 4 stars ? Ended up with 4, because I DID enjoy reading this story. This was a light romance, with bits of dark moments. A romance about a woman who drags a man out of his isolated world and depression. A good read with likable characters. I liked the H. Despite his grumpy appearance. I also liked the h. and her big heart.
I liked their interactions and their budding romance. I also found the H's strugglings intruiging to read about. There were somre twist in this book I enjoyed that I did not see coming. What did not ageree with me in this book, was the amount of names of people in the book, that is thrown in with small "teasers" about things happened to them, that basicly had notthing to do with the storyline. I kept thinking this book was part of a series. That I was missing some info (that I would have gotten, had I read the supposedly previous books.) This did however not so much interfere with the story, but was somewhat annoying. I Also found the book a bit rushed at the end. And would have liked to have seen more of the process of the H. being socialised. He went from being a recluse to all of a sudden : "joining the party" .That said, I truly enjoyed reading this story. It was all in all a good story, that ( in my oppinion,) could have been made more substancial with even more touch of darkness. I would like to have heard more about what happens next with this couple, because they are bound to be experiencing some rough waters as a couple, considering his past and considering his reputation AS " Crazy Joe". This is still a god read and a book I would recomend reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2024For me it was very emotional. So if you’re a softy like me you will need tissues. The story is just moving. Rescue horses, rescue an abused man in hiding. The only complaint I have is that it had sexual scenes and I don’t like reading that. So, I skipped those pages to move onto the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2023Whiskey River Rescue is a book outside my normal genre. Typically I read action adventure and action romance novels ,so, I got this to mix things up. I'm glad I tried this because I found it to be an enjoyable change of pace. I was quite intrigued with the story and the characters. I was both sympathetic and frustrated with the male protagonist, and, impressed and moved by the strength, patience and empathy of the female protagonist. Normally I lose interest with "relationship" stories, but, at no time did I get bored with this story. I was so reeled-in by this novel that read it in a day and a half. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unglaublich gut!!
Leseempfehlung? Unbedingt! Vielleicht nicht vor dem Schlafengehen anfangen....

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent humane story
Very well woven ale of human relationship. Characters alternately defined and the story telling is too class. Enjoyed reading it

5.0 out of 5 stars A uncontrollable page turner
Heart wrenching but beautiful. I cried, I championed and I fought for them to make it to the other side. It didn't disappoint.
