Heart Of Destiny: (The Heart Of The Citadel Book One With Bonus Wizards of Bastion) Kindle Edition
During the Great Purge, all magic was destroyed and those who could wield it were driven into exile. From that time on, the world of Gaia churned on in relative peace and prosperity.
When the emperor of the central Citadel suddenly dies, his apprentice takes his place. Benevolent and loved, the new emperor is a benign ruler, bridging the age-old conflicts between the provinces. The citadel is a symbolic as well as a physical barrier to maintaining the fragile peace.
However, the brazen kidnapping of ten young women shatters the accord, and the councilors of the provinces gather at the Citadel to demand that justice be served. It is a flame dropped into dry tinder. Rife with suspicion and hatred, each province accuses its neighbour of treachery.
But the emperor has other plans. He alone knows who is responsible for the kidnapping of the young women, and he has no intention of sharing that knowledge. Where magic is involved, there can only be one conqueror. The fight for ultimate control of magic has begun.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2018I loved this book and I am looking forward to reading more.
It is very well written. The characters are not the one-dimensional puppets that you sometimes see in fantasy; rather, they are developed and credible. The description is good and it flows well.
It is packed with intrigue, adventure and magic; a highly engaging read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2018My first read from author Susan Faw. I got this book back in April of this year & I’m just getting around to reading it. A thoroughly entertaining well-written read that has all the makings of an epic with likable, well-developed characters that make you want to read more by this author! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017Outstanding read! I must read it again and then reread it some more. The sheer number of characters brought to life on these pages must have been a Herculean effort, so as to give them lives of their own regardless if they are humankind, dragonkind, or Djinn. Magic is reborn in this world, though it had not totally died. Being magical or a dragon was anathema to the Emperor. A new generation has come up and must defeat this Emperor who will not stop until magic and all magic kind are thoroughly purged. I'm ready to read the next one. I recommend this book for the young adult and adult groups as well. Susan Faw is showing us why she is the award winning author she is.

I had a lot of trouble rating this book because I found it interesting and well written but I could only read it for about 20mins before I would start feeling drowsy. I remember each and every moment and I was drawn in from the very beginning. I love the concept but there were parts that fell a little flat. It seemed like some of the scenes weren't entirely organic, like they were conceptualized and written to match an inspired line or visual. While these moments and lines are generally the inspiration behind almost all books the ability to match the rest of the moments around that line are what separates good authors from great authors. Faw has to work a bit more on her technique if she wants to move up to being a great author. Another problem I discovered is that the characters seemed a little one dimensional; the villain is truly villainous, the innocents truly innocent. This is rarely our reality and one of the only ways to anchor a fantasy novel is to have characters that are relatable or at least exhibit a bit more depth. In truth the only character we really feel like we get to know is the villain.
This series does have great potential though. By the end of this book I didn't want to put it down and I'm totally ready for the next book and hopefully getting to know the other characters better.
*I volunteered to read and honestly review an ARC of this book*
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2018A good book, and a promising start to the series.
It was an enjoyable read, though it felt very much like character development was sacrificed in order to build the world. There are many characters, both male and female, whose stories I look forward to reading as the series progresses, but I got very little in-depth analysis of those characters in this book. About the only character we really got to know was Madrid. (That dude is EEEEEEEVIL.)
All in all, a good story.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2020The world is defined, characters found, and the first quests started. There are kidnapped children, humans, dragons, djinn, various elmentals, and sea monsters.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2018When an evil rogue Djinn becomes Emperor of Gaia, he tries to destroy all the witches, dragons and Djinn, so that he can rule the providences completely. Will he succeed or will these warrior witches succeed in defeating him with the help of the dragons and Djinn?
Looking forward to reading more and finding out how Emily factors in all of this .

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Beryl.
I don't read fantasy very often, but if I fancy reading something a little outside my usual genre Susan Faw is the one to go to. This is a good book and I'm sure fantasy readers would give it the full 5 stars. And can I just say, I love Beryl! What an awesome name for a dragon!

3.0 out of 5 stars Untidy
Not the best of books that i have read, some chapters tend to be a trifle untidy i.e. they lack logic. Overall the book is readable but I have read better.
