Homecoming: A Sweet Christian Romance (Sweet Hearts of Sweet Creek Book 1) Kindle Edition
A heart broken twice by love and family.
Can returning to her childhood ranch give her a second chance with both?
Sheryl Kyle isn’t the trusting type. Her abusive late husband and her disapproving stepfather gave her little reason to feel otherwise. Until a rugged rancher named Mark seeks her to tell her that her stepfather is on his deathbed and his dying wish is to reconcile.
Despite hearing the worst about Sheryl from his partner and her stepbrother, Mark is drawn to the hauntingly beautiful woman who agrees to come back to the ranch.
When his ranching partner suffers an injury at the worst possible time, Mark is surprised and delighted that Sheryl agrees to work by his side.
As Sheryl and Mark’s friendship deepens, she suppresses her growing feelings toward him. Her trust is a commodity she can’t give out as easily as before. But Mark makes her want to rethink returning to her previous lonely life.
How can she open her heart to this man when so many have let her down before?

I don’t know how to say it very eloquently, so I’ll simply say that I loved this book. The characters are honest and realistic. Mark is such Godly man, not afraid to share God’s love with those around him. His family loves and supports each other, as well as those in their lives.
Sheryl has had a hard life. Part of it was her fault, but she, unlike Mark, had little support in most any aspect of her life. She is hard and self-contained in order to protect herself.
Their story explores her transformation mainly, guided by Mark pointing her toward God, and other characters, as well. Mark’s growth is more subtle but also evident. Their connection is emotional and touching.
I highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy a Western setting. I recently went to Canada for the first time, to Calgary and Banff. So, I was fascinated by that aspect of the book. I believe the author is Canadian, and everything seemed authentic to me.
The reason for a deduction of half a star: There are some proofreading errors, including quite a few missing periods at the ends of sentences and some formatting errors. Sometimes a new paragraph should be started for a new speaker but isn’t…probably a formatting issue. Although annoying and distracting, they were not so egregious as to take away from the story. Try it!
Sheryl Kyle had left home at 18 and hadn't been back for 8 years. Mark Andrews had traveled to Edmonton to find her. She was the step-sister of his brother-in-law Nate Krickson. Nate's father, Ed, Sheryl's stepfather was dying and wanted to see Sheryl one more time before he died. He had been a harsh stepfather and he wanted her forgiveness.
Sheryl was broken and didn't open herself up for heartbreak because she had experienced too much loss and heartbreak in her life. She had lost her father at a young age and when her mother remarried six months later, she hadn't grieved her father enough and became a rebellious teenager. Then when she married right out of high school she found her husband was abusive and mean and she was constantly trying to protect herself from more physical and emotional pain.
Mark was attracted to Sheryl and wanted to protect her help to heal her soul. But, try as he might, Sheryl just didn't want to experience more pain and she shied away. As time went on, Mark was convinced that he had lost her but kept praying for her. Would she ever be able to finally find the forgiveness and love she had always wanted or would she lose out because she wasn't willing to show her vulnerability and show her weakness so she could be healed and made strong?
I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. In fact, I immediately began reading another book by this author.
We are also introduced to her step-brother 's business partner and his parents and siblings. His sister is married to Sheryl's step-brother! They had heard all about Sheryl and her spoiled, stubborn, sneaky ways. From them she learns what the words "faith" and "family" are supposed to look!
Ms. Aarsen, as always, has crafted unforgettable characters! I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and I melted with the sweetness of love! I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did. I bought the other two books in this series so I'm off to begin Book Two!
Sheryl was absolutely broken and her healing process was very painful and slow. Her past needed to be reconciled before she could move on and meeting Mark while in that healing stage was a blessing and a curse. For which one of then is still to be determined though. Poor Mark was so incredibly patient. Where I would've walked away already, he kept fighting for Sheryl. I have been a Christian for 20 years almost and I STILL don't understand that kind of love. The selfless part, yes... but the waiting and prayerful expectation, not knowing if the person you're waiting on will reciprocate has to be the most agonizing feeling!
I was torn for Mark to hold on or move on. I was angry at Sheryl for being so scared but at the same time I AM Sheryl! It's hard to believe somebody could love you like that with a tarnished past. As badly as this book frustrated me though, I couldn't get it out of my head and it touched me deeply. I loved the message of forgiveness. I'm glad I stuck it out to the end too.

The faith aspect of this story touched my heart; it clearly showed the necessity of faith and forgiveness.
The familiar settings of British Columbia and Alberta added a sense of homecoming for my imagination, too. I loved Homecoming and award it five stars. Highly recommended.

The characters are well drawn, ‘real’ people with all the complexities of real people. At the root of the story is a fractured family - father, son, and step-daughter - each of whom failed to understand the others, misinterpreting their actions and motivations. The step-daughter, Sheryl, feeling abandoned and unwanted especially after the death of her mother, eloped with the local ‘bad boy’ and cut herself off.
The book begins when a connection of the family, Mark, tracks her down to give her the news that her step-father, Ed, is seriously ill and wants to see her. Sheryl reluctantly returns, though she feels nothing but hostility towards Ed.
This is a Christian novel, and the faith of Mark, in particular, helps to drive it forward. It does not offer a quick and easy solution, choosing to explore the crippling effects of bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness, and how hard it can be to let go of the past. The emotional content of the story is very sensitively handled, having me in tears several times. The final resolution builds naturally and was very satisfying.
Highly recommended.
