The Vigilante Terrorists (RAPCA Book 1) Kindle Edition
Meanwhile, a third-party presidential candidate, Brett Martinez, has taken the nation by storm and is a serious threat to break the two-party stranglehold of power in America, but Democratic and Republican forces are mobilizing behind the scenes to fight back, forming a temporary alliance to bring down the newcomer before he can shake the system to its core and change the foundations of the American political system forever. They plan an elaborate, well-financed character assassination smear campaign using their allies in the media, Big Tech, Hollywood, and political propaganda organizations. But what will happen when the same forces trying to destroy Martinez are themselves targeted for a different kind of assassination?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2018Before the aficionados of Ayn Rand - of whom I have long been a serious student - throw up their hands in protest, I hasten to emphasise the word ‘shades’ . The Vigilante Terrorists is a far leaner work than Rand’s, and covers a narrower spectrum of characters, time and locations. Yet this book is as scarily close to the unadmitted as was Atlas Shrugged. Self-serving financial dictatorships setting out to murder good men and destroy integrity and character by media manipulation. How easy. How feasible. How close. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2020The Vigilante Terrorists by Joe Messerli
This is a novel about media corruption, and a cabal of cynical propaganda artists that manipulate public opinion, weed out honest candidates for public office, and destroy the characters, reputation, and even the lives of ordinary decent people. A small group of Americans organize to fight them, (eight by my count) ranging from ex-military Marines and SEALS and a policeman, to a doctor, chemistry teacher and several techie wizards They all have had their lives or the lives of people close to them nearly (or totally) ruined by cynical media lies and manipulation. They decide to take revenge by killing the worst of the lot, to "encourage" the survivors to regain their credibility and objectivity as journalists.
What I liked:
The author took time to flesh out his main RAPCA team members, with particular attention to Aaron Newsome, team leader, and Abby Benton, Arron's friend and physician. The major characters seemed like real people with strengths and weaknesses. One Journalist, New York Times reporter, Patrick Adams, shows considerable growth and character development. One point, easy to miss, was that the victims targeted by the RAPCA team were not selected because of ideology, though most were far left, but because they had abandoned any pretense of journalistic objectivity and professionalism and were simply cynical purveyors of lies, misinformation and distortion. The character of Colin Bennett, head of the hatchet man media group, made an excellent bad guy. Another evil character was the Reverend Louis Holder. Editing was not bad, though there were a few typos and punctuation errors. There were some plot twists to keep the reader guessing. Overall, the book is well written. CONTENT WARNING: Scenes of torture. Some "F" bombs.
What I did Not Like:
The plot is problematic. I have a hard time believing that the abuse suffered by the RAPCA team members were a plausible motive to launch a conspiracy such as this, since all eight people were shown to be mentally stable and sane. I think only pretty extreme mental illness could account for this, which would make the careful planning and skilled execution unlikely. So the plot lacks credibility in my mind. A second problem, assuming that all the facts in the novel represent real life (and many do, I fear!) is that such a campaign of terrorism would ultimately be fruitless. The firearms discussion was pretty reasonable. One glaring exception was the statement: that Kyle Topper could consistently hit the "center of a quarter" at ranges up to 2,000 yards. That would mean a .3" group, which is basically impossible at 100 yards, let alone 2,000 yards, unless it is a total fluke. It the author had said, "capable of hitting a man-sized target at 2,000 yards," then OK; I could accept that. So a wild exaggeration.
The idea that such vigilante action might be justified to take down false-news purveyors is unsettling, and I did not like that part of the plot.
Conclusion:
An interesting novel that does expose some real life problems. Some the the media blitzes in the story sound chillingly like real life. The plot does lack in credibility and is unsettling. Still, it held my attention until the end. I think it is worthy of 4 Stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2020I am not an alarmist or a conspiracy theorist. That being said...what is going on in the U.S. today could happen EXACTLY the way it is laid out in this book. The detailed explanations could very well be what is happening in the media and our political system.
I was pulled in immediately with the character profiles and the building of the plot lines.
Damn, this was an excellent read! Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2018I grew up with the author so when I saw that he wrote a book, I figured what the heck. I have read hundreds of books and you'd never guess this was his debit effort..I couldn't put it down. Great plot, characters and REALLY gets you thinking about the state of our country. I never trusted the "news" but this takes it 10 steps further. Great job, Joe!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2018Well, this is an interesting look at some real problems that exist here with the media and the money-men. I would have given it 3 1/2 stars if that were possible but I deducted 1 star for the very real political slant that appears steadily in this otherwise great read. It's well-written, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018The author takes events right from the headlines, and those likely not reported on, to weave an interesting and enjoyable tale. One that can have chilling consequences if it were all true. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action, intrigue, and/or conspiracies. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018This is a great fictional account of what the corrupt media and the powers that be are really doing to this country! They are manipulating us like puppets! Hopefully this book can be an important part in exposing this and getting people to reject this!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2018This book really makes you think about what you see on the news and read on the internet. I would recommend this book to anyone whether politics are an interesting topic to you or not. Excellent job and I can’t wait for the sequel!
