Game of Greed: An engrossing Crime Thriller (Francis Scott-Wren Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars 95 ratings

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.

Breathtaking International thriller from a bestselling Scandinavian author.

On the surface Francis Scott-Wren appears like any other rich socialite – tailored suits, old world charm and significant wealth. A man born to privilege. But what only a very few know, is that Scott-Wren has a secret: he uses his wealth and influence to rid the world of greed and selfishness.

Now he has his sights on ruthless power broker George Schwartz, who directs Schwartz Inc. as a vehicle of personal profit and vengeance. Backed by his squad of highly trained agents, including his loyal sidekicks Dhammakarati, a Buddhist monk, and the anti-social female agent Jo, Scott-Wren and his team set off on a collision course with Schwartz that will leave some dead and others exposed.

As the action travels from five-star hotels via Buddhist monasteries to the hallowed halls of the world’s most powerful players, Scott-Wren engages Schwartz in a fierce battle of wits that exposes disturbing similarities between himself and his prey. What remains to be seen is whether they really are so different and how far Scott-Wren is willing to go for victory.

" ... fast-paced, enjoyable and well-structured …"Henry Porter, author of The Bell Ringers

Full of action and international intrigue, Charlotte Larsen’s intense thriller is also an examination of significant moral dilemmas including whether the end justifies the means, personal gain versus the greater good, and the righteousness of vigilante justice. An unusual mix of business, action, existential themes, and meditation. Readers will find themselves not only on a journey full of danger and violence but also of self-discovery.

As thought-provoking as it is entertaining, Game of Greed is a riveting standalone crime thriller and a gripping exploration of human nature and the integrity of the world of big business. If you like passionate heroes, spine-chilling suspense, and a fight for justice, then you’ll love Charlotte Larsen’s fast-paced Thriller.

This was a fast moving and interesting read with many elements I like in a story. While Francis Scott Wren tries to bring down an evil conglomerate, we also find Buddhist monks being murdered...

The characters are indeed interesting as well as the story. I must agree with another reviewer that the MOST interesting character who seemed to be the main focus of the story was Jo Vermeer, a member of Wren's team. Jo is a wonderful character in that she is indeed a tough woman yet she still has a vulnerability about her. She seems to be the center of the story as everything swirls around her. She has pride but will do whatever it takes to meet her mission. For Jo, failure is not an option.

This is a story of battling international greed and people with shady morals. You are sent trotting about the globe as team members try to complete the mission given to them. This is a good story for a first time author, and I hope to see more of her work soon!

In Game of Greed by Charlotte Larsen an extremely rich Englishman, Thomas Scott-Wren has decided to ruin wealthy and amoral Thomas Schwartz and his shadowy company because they are planning to destroy a prestigious law firm in favor of another law practice. To achieve his goal Scott-Wren has assembled a team of experts in computer hacking, intelligence gathering, martial arts, spying and anything else necessary to achieve his purpose. One of his chief operatives is a Buddhist monk, at whose monastery in Sri Lanka much of the action takes place. There's also a glamorous agent, sometime lover, seeker after truth at the monastery, Jo Vermeer. For reasons of her own she seeks revenge against a wealthy Sri Lankan businessman and colleague of Schwartz. She does a lot of soul searching, meditation and martial arts practice while formulating her plans, which are at odds with Scott-Wren's more ethical approach. Both Jo and Scott-Wren ultimately win, but not without a price.
Although the novel is well written, it's a bit tedious as the characters tend to go off on tangents with little relevance to the main plot. There's a a lot of background information on Sri Lanka, Buddhist monks, monasteries and martial arts.
I received a free e-book in exchange for an unbiased review.

The basic premise is that a rich playboy has decided to fight greed and help the common people. To aid him in his venture he has put together a team of young super computer hackers, a sometimes girlfriend with deadly fighting skills, and a Buddhist monk who runs a camp for meditation and also for training monks in a secret variation of martial arts (the girlfriend engages there in meditation and also trains in the martial arts). This team is faced with stopping the most powerful man in the world who is a behind the scenes fixer. The villain spends his time wiping out
businesses that compete with the villain's clients, enabling the clients to rise to the top of their niche in the business world. My reason for giving only three stars is that there is way too much narrative and soul searching by all the players as the point of view changes from scene to scene and the back story must be filled in. When there is a climactic moment approaching, the description seems to jump right past the action and pick up after the fact. Someone is going to be killed -- next moment, the death has happened with no details given. So, in short, strong on psychological analysis of the characters, weak on action.

Interesting read - good character and plot development

I disagree with the author's premise. I dislike that I could not discover that premise with certainty. I dislike that other reviewers see this as a good vs evil story. I see this as a sociopath vs psychopath. Murder as a means is the line which seems to define the difference--except when a rogue employee/lover of the sociopath crosses it. Is the sociopath/employer now anything other than a psychopath by virtue of an employee/lover/confidant? The writing volume frequently obfuscates. I skimmed the last half --trailing the story lines. In sum--the juice of this book, for me, was not worth the mental squeeze/effort required. Tomas Mann's novel, Buddenbrooks was my intro to European authors' mining of the character's thoughts ad nausem. Charlotte Larsen may have also written a great European novel. Almost all other reviewers rate this book very highly. Despite a degree in literature and an MBA, I failed to appreciate it.
