A Crafty Crime (A Stoneybrook Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,563 ratings

Even close-knit towns have secrets …

Hadley James is finally living the life she's always wanted: making jam and selling it at the local farmers market. When the local knitting store owner asks her to cat-sit, Hadley doesn’t give it a second thought. What could go wrong? A lot, apparently. Suddenly, her simple cat-sitting job has turned into a murder investigation and life no longer seems so perfect.

Her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, is on the case but they’ve always done everything together and she can’t help but get involved. Plus, it’s much easier for Hadley to infiltrate the local knitting club than it is for her brother.

Following a trail of crafty clues, the James twins learn that their sleepy town might be harboring more darkness than they could’ve imagined.

Recipes from Marisa McClellan, creator of Food in Jars, included: strawberry rhubarb jam and pickled asparagus!

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

She has two completed cozy mystery series. Pepper Brooks, a six book set, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. The Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are perfect for readers who like a pinch of paranormal in their mysteries. There are eight books in that completed series. Eryn's also has a few ongoing series. One is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Her ongoing series, Whiskers and Words Mysteries, is all about a woman who runs a bookshop that doubles as a rescue cat sanctuary. Her newest series, A Murder at the Morrisey, is perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building. It follows Meg and a cast of living and ghostly residents as they solve mysteries in their downtown Seattle apartment building.

I'm currently on book 6 but want potential new readers to know this is a WONDERFUL series. The author does a terrific job of developing characters and relationships -- always makes me feel good. The mysteries are well-crafted and I usually learn something interesting (new crafts) in each book. I've read every other series this author has written, which is what brought me to start in on this one. Please give this series a chance to please you and warm your heart, as it has done for me.

As for being the 1st in the series, it was a slow start but eventually developed into a good book. Even though the reading and characters development were slow, it ended with me wanting to read the next. Therefore, I am on to book number 2:).

A cute and cozy mystery. I love the descriptions of the area and town; it creates a stunning picture in my mind. The main characters are likeable. The backstory is interesting and I can't wait to see how that influences Hadley's future. The town has so many small businesses and it sounds amazing. If only it existed in real life. I wish there was a little more information to solve the mystery before the very end, but that's more of a preference to figure it out, and didn't take away from the story. Well written, the descriptions were lovely. No racy scenes or foul language, for those who avoid that. I've already started reading the next book! I don't want to put the series down.

Story had a very slow start but once you get 5 chapters or so in it starts to pick up a bit. It was a good read after the slower start, was not the suspect that I thought, so the mystery was good till the end.

I read the reviews and admit I was a little skeptical, but decided to give it a try anyway. I was delighted! Some of the reviews complain that it wasn't realistic, what who done it is? Okay, the police and some detective ones are, but those are under the drama genre, not a cozy. Really, don't you make it unrealistic as soon as you make murder cozy? Others complained about the gossiping, hey, folks, I live in a small town, it's what makes the town go round. I enjoyed Hadley's attitude of not throwing her ex under the bus. I get so annoyed with all the books that feature a character who is divorced or going through one and most of the book is the garbage they have to put out there. It was refreshing to read a book where she decides to be an adult about it. Yes, she still needs to work on forgiveness, but don't we all? She's going through a process, but isn't lashing out and placing blame. Okay, so much for all the naysayers, oh, someone complained about her lack of knitting knowledge, I didn't notice, other than I knew socks were going to be too hard for her, which she discovered. Now, on to the good stuff, Hadley is taking care of her neighbor's cat while she is going to visit her sister. However, the first morning she stops to feed the cat she discovers the neighbor never went on her trip, instead she passed away in her rocking chair. Hadley calls her twin brother, Paul, a deputy to report her findings. After things are taken care of, she's sent on her way to go to work and return to her life, only now she has the sweet kitty Ansel in the basket of her bike. As things progress it is discovered that Edith, the neighbor, didn't die of a natural heart attack, but was poisoned. Paul's job is in jeopardy and his boss is hindering the investigation process because he wants to replace him with his nephew. Because of this, Hadley and Suzann decide they will pass on any information they hear about Edith to Paul. I thought the way it all occurred was far more realistic than the mysteries you read where nobody civilian confronts someone because they think they're the murderer and the most that happens is they make them a little mad. This is done by folks just having normal conversations, I'm can't go to dinner with you tonight, I'm helping with a party. Who's party? Oh, haven't you heard, Robert was released from jail early and his mom's throwing a welcome home party. From this Hadley remembers that Edith was the reason Robert went to jail and notifies Paul to look into his whereabouts. In many other mysteries Hadley would have gone, by herself, over to confront Robert and accuse him of murdering Edith, putting herself in jeopardy. I liked the realism of how the plot was built in this fashion. Extra stars for being a true cozy - no swearing, no sex, no disturbing violence. One more star for the fact that I had the killer pegged, but for the wrong reason - good job!

I look forward to more books from Eryn Scott. The main character is a twin, Hadley James, is a recently divorced jam maker in a small town. Her twin, Paul, is a policeman in Stoneybrook. Her BFF is Suzanne, a local artist & a graphic artist. Hadley discovers the owner of a cat she's supposed to be watching while her owner goes out of town died in her home. The cat's owner has become a bitter, difficult owner of the local knitting/yarn shop. It's discovered she's been murdered & you'll have to read the book to discover who did it. There's also a former high school friend/best friend of Hadley's ex-husband who returns to town. Looks like a romance may be brewing. I found I didn't want to put the book down until I finished it. Loved it....it's a lovely cozy mystery....includes recipes too.
