Young, chip on the shoulder, druggie, and rich. Never did anything but wrong his whole life. Went thru money like drinking water and had no qualms about asking mommy for more..which she gave. Then a feeling worthlessness finds him trying to go it alone but then his world stops spinning. His older brother commits suicide...run over by a train...he just stepped out in front of it, kneeling on the tracks..impossible!
This story takes a long hard look at corruption in many levels of professional people right to the ones we depend upon to save us from the evil in this world.
A brilliant read with characters you can see and hear. Their walk the a tangled web of foulness is both amazing and horrifying. A well thought out plot that provides many surprises and even a laugh or two. My favorite character is Tomas, always ready for anything and a most loyal friend. I enjoyed this story greatly and I'm sure you will also.

I purchased this book for a Mardi Gras read. When I began I was a little disappointed and thinking “I don’t think this is the book for me.” My husband had already read it and he encouraged me to continue on and am I glad i did. It didn’t take me long to get completely hooked. It was a quick and fun read. I liked the characters and am looking forward to the next in the series.

Felix Herbert knows his brother had no reason to commit suicide. But that's what was decided had happened the night Robert knelt on the train tracks in front of an oncoming train. Felix and Robert grew up rich in New Orleans. But Robert became a doctor and Felix had never found a purpose. Fighting a drug addiction, he moved out of his parents' house and got a job in a restaurant kitchen and rented a dingy apartment. With Robert's death, Felix was so convinced of the wrongness of the conclusion, that he decided to do a little digging. The first step was talking to the driver of the train that had hit Robert. The driver told Felix something he had not told the police. And from there Felix tracks down corruption in the highest places, from a carnival krewe made up of rich doctors to the NOLA police department itself. Felix is unable to hide the fact that he is investigating Robert's death, which he knows in his gut is murder. Soon he has the attention of a couple of dirty cops and doctors who are peddling a dangerous drug. This novel is a great thriller, non-stop action with twists and turns. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a book they can't put down.

I like noir, solid type stuff, and this book gave me a good feeling at its start. By 30% through, it seemed that the hero was more a trudge of little thought. It continued that way. I felt I was watching some of the "lovable by luck" tv detectives who have answers fall from the sky, trip and knock someone off the 10th floor and find that he was a bad guy so it's OK. Nope, I want to see the logic unfold, the hints I missed, the smartness of the hero. Not here.. Pulling out guns, dropping wires and gizmos in public, accusing bad guys of bad things in seclusion, drugging someone to borrow equipment. Not my idea of intelligent.
The book could use a little more editing, but not the worst of what I've read. Because of the natural course of the book's simple formula, it was a little hard to finish, but that is something I am compelled to almost always do.
Because I already have over 1000 ebooks waiting for me, I spend time on the reviews. No point in reading 5 star ones, I won't learn anything. Why do people write 4 star reviews saying the books was superb? Hello? 4*? Then what is a 5*? So I gave this 3*. The book flowed, could be edited better, the hero grated on me as too lazy to think seriously, and really, a drug that takes 10 minutes to lose your memory and the FDA is cool with that? Other logic flaws were not so bad.

Well written mystery that keeps you wondering until the end. Very interesting and described locations keep the action steadily paced. I don't know personally about the drug scene and what people go through or crime (s) but it helped my awareness about how easy it can be to get involved without even trying.

This was my first read of the author, Seth Pevey. I am very impressed with this mystery. I stayed up late to finish it! I just could not put it down. Good plot, characters you could love, sympathize with, as well as hate for the bad guys. Reveals were made throughout the story line. Can't wait for the second book in the series!

Worth 5 stars because it is a well-written, interesting and very wryly humorous New Orleans mystery that you won't put down. Terrific first novel in what I hope becomes a series. Loved the inside look at the New Orleans rich people. Loved the Mardi Gras parts. Especially loved the with and intelligence of the characters' dialogue. Very little base violence, just a couple of shootings and that train business. Good reading and I will look for more from the author.

Can't wait to get into the next one. Will purchase it as I idid this one, so I can keep it in my library. Love all the descriptions of NOLA since I lived there for a number of years and it really brought me back. Characters were spot on.

Plan to follow your new series and buy the books instead of using Kindle Unlimited so I can keep them in my library. One question however, I can't remember where Spanish Turn is. Seems I remember it being on the West Bank near the I-10 bridge. If you have an opportunity, please send me an email to the address on your Amazon Follow page with some brief directions. Thanks and keep up the good work...

I enjoyed this book - on the whole it's well written (it would have been five stars but for a few irritating spelling errors (haunch instead of hunch: two totally different bits of a person!) and a lack of punctuation occasionally, but I'd recommend it.
