About the author
Andrew Claymore grew up on the East Coast in a region that the sixties ignored. After several years with an armored unit, he spent nearly a decade working as an operator with military intelligence. His writing has been produced for both national and international agencies and his work has taken him throughout North America and Western Europe. He lives now in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains where he writes SF/Thrillers while occasionally glancing out the window at an unkempt lawn.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2024I read to be entertained. To be entertained I need the following:
A good plot, interesting and perhaps not always expected. BUT I cannot stand a great plot that is only “great” because the writer has cheated with the rules. Nothing stops me from finishing a book faster than blatant cheating. It’s lazy! I mean, the author created the universe and the rules, and if they can’t make the plot work while having that much power, they aren’t any good to begin with.
Sure, a small glitch, perhaps even unnoticed by the author, can be expected. But big glaring gaps are inexcusable.
Next up are characters. Are they interesting? Do I care what happens to them? Do they behave believably?
Writing style is important too. Is it natural and easy to follow? Can it be easily understood and are the scenes illustrated well.
World building can also make a novel better, or lack of it can ruin the novel.
How does Andrew G. Claymore’s first Human book do? Pretty well!
The plot is very good. I’ll talk about world-building here as well, as they are tied together. I try to avoid spoilers too, so I will be as vague as possible. It’s no secret from the dust-jacket that humans are slaves to more technological alien races. That’s unusual and creates an underlying plot - clearly we don’t want humans to be slaves forever.
Also there is a form of time travel involved, which when used carefully and doesn’t feel abused, is a classic of sci-fi genres.
The world consists of an Imperial structure with Emperors and Nobles that makes for a good rule book that the author seems to keep consistent.
Moving on to characters, there are several likable characters that it is easy to get behind and cheer for in the book. Obviously Eth is the main character, if there is one. Meshack (sorry, I got the Biblical character stuck in my head and that is who he is to me now) is also a primary character. There are dozens of other important characters, and they have good depth - even the main “bad guy” has honor and is not just a two-dimensional cardboard cutout of a bad guy.
And the writing style feels like a fully edited, contracted writer working for a publisher, book - NOT like the typical KU amateur books we get so often. It DOES have a few typos and whatnot, but mostly it looks and feels professional.
It’s not PERFECT, but the failures mostly feel unimportant. The WORSE failure in my humble opinion is the lack of world building when it comes to the alien races. I have no idea what separates one race from another except the occasional discussion of hearts, and the relatively cool feature that one race can sleep each hemisphere of its brain to sleep without being unconscious at the time. The author is pretty good at not giving too many people superpowers that make the game too easy though.
There is inter species sex which is a little odd given that we aren’t really given much info on how the species look and if or why they would be attracted to one another. And I could have done without the bizarre public sex ritual for nobles at one point in the book. It wasn’t gross or terrible, it was just kind of weird enough to make it uncomfortable maybe?? It wasn’t a big enough deal to be important, it was just odd to me.
In the end, I want a book that is FUN. I hate books where the good guys are constantly beaten down until the end when they save the day. I also want some tension and challenges. This book balances that well and most of the time I feel GOOD about what is happening, but not overconfident.
I rarely give five star ratings, and this book is no exception. I would say it is a solid 4.5 stars, but I always round up in my reviews because I am a nice guy!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019I'm not much of a scifi buff, but I tried this book and was totally surprised just how good this book was. The author put a lot of effort into it and it shows. There a lot of characters in this story so it is a bit confusing at the start. Not to worry, it all clears up as the story continues. I think a preface that gave a little background to the story would have helped. This is a must read book, plenty of action and story for everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2020An interesting story that had a few more twists than I thought. - Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021What a thrilling delight this book is! Humans, you can't keep them down. Take our young subject, for example: Even though a slave, he has his Pride, honor and a clever audacity that promotes his own, humanity’s and his Lord’s interests.

Not my usual genre, but I have to admit it's one heck of a page turner, I really had to find out what happens to Eth and his team. Well worth the read.
