Deadly Purchase (The High Country Mystery Series Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 36 ratings

Buyer beware. To create excitement, Ruger, a shady dealer at the annual rendezvous flea market, puts up for auction a locked Civil War trunk with contents to be sold sight unseen! That night, the highest bidder, Zeke Jones, is found stabbed to death beside the trunk. Sheriff Jeff McQuede believes Jones has interrupted a robbery in progress. Several people had offered to buy old coins, photos, and medals from him, which indicates to McQuede that Jones had already sold what the robber had been after. Acts of vandalism follow as the thief continues his ruthless search. Baffled, McQuede must beat the killer to a treasure he can’t even identify. Fear spreads throughout the Black River Rendezvous as McQuede tries to discover the secret behind the mysterious trunk before another murder occurs.

Loretta Jackson, author of Flames of Deceit and Wake of Evil, winner of the Edna Osbourne Whitcomb writing award, now co-authors with her sister, Vickie Britton. They have written over fifty novels including the Jeff McQuede High Country Mystery series: 1-Murder in Black, 2-Stealer of Horses, 3-Whispers of the Stones, 4-The Executioner's Hood, 5-An Icy Death, 6-Crying Woman Bridge, 7-Murder and the Good Old Boy's Club, 8-Rapid River Hoax. They are co-authors of the eight-book Ardis Cole archaeological mysteries, in print by Rowe Publishing, and in audio by Books and Motion, and the Arla Vaughn Pre-Columbian mysteries.

Loretta's interests center around history and Native American culture. The sisters have co-authored numerous short stories and always travel to the setting they use. When Loretta was teaching Sioux students at Crazy Horse High on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Vickie lived in Laramie, Wyoming, so both are are drawn to Old West themes, which have provided a background for much of their work. Their western novels include Death Comes in Pairs, Rails and Aces, and the Luck of the Draw series: The Devil's Game, The Fifth Ace, and The Wild Card.

Loretta returned to Kansas to teach English at Mission Valley High near Eskridge and now lives in Junction City.

This series is fun to read because I see modern Western aspects in solving crime . Wyoming is such an historic place . This story pulls in the Civil War . History repeats. History is forever .
    One typo .

I love how well written and easy to follow it is. I also like that there is no profanity or sex scenes in it.

Sheriff Jeff McQuede has nothing to fear when an ancient trunk is auctioned off padlocked and unopened at the Black River Rendezvous. It doesn’t contain a body, after all.
But when the trunk is opened and the contents displayed it sets off deadly results including murder. Not even McQuede’s best friend, Professor Barry Dawson, is safe from the haunting chain of events that expose roots planted back in the Civil War.
With a mix of fascinating facts about photography and the Civil War woven into the plot, and the equally fascinating and unique characters—“Deadly Purchase”—delivers.

Great mystery! This book has history, love story, and finding treasure at an auction, which is always fun, and of course a murder that Jeff McQuede must solve. I really enjoyed reading and listening to this book, and I'm always surprised to find out the premise of each High Country Mystery. It was a pleasure to read this book.

The high country series by sister authors Loretta Jackson and Vickie Britton are always great reads. This book is no exception to that rule. Mystery in theform of an antique trunk leads to murder and mayhem for Sheriff Jeff McQuede. Thisbook, like the others is well written and takes readers on a great adventure.
