Kari: A Sweet Western Historical Romance (Walker Creek Brides Book 1) Kindle Edition
Still grieving the loss of her mother, Kari Hagen leaves her younger siblings behind and travels to Walker Creek, Texas. She promised to deliver a letter to her mother’s first love, so now she just has to find him. Should she accept an offer of assistance from that tall cowboy who’s as handsome as any man she’s ever seen? The sooner she gives the letter to Mr. Caleb Walker, the sooner Kari can start earning money as a seamstress for train fare back to her family in Minnesota.
Seth Davis isn't expecting any surprises when he meets the train. He plans to pick up his uncle’s new racehorse and head back to Walker Creek Ranch. Yet what about that pretty little miss standing alone on the platform…all honey-gold curls, blue calico, and no taller than his chin? Is she lost? He’s never seen her before, though she looks oddly familiar, something telling Seth that his day just got a whole lot more interesting.

About the author
Miriam Minger is the bestselling author of sweet to sensual historical romances that sweep you from Viking times to Regency England to the American West. Miriam Minger says: It's been a wonderful experience to have all my novels published as eBooks, but the greatest thrill for me as a writer is when readers take the time to let me know they enjoyed my stories...
"I have read hundreds if not thousands of books in my lifetime and not once have I ever been moved to comment on one until now. This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. I laughed. I cried. I remained at the edge of my seat devouring every single word you wove with this incredible story. I just wanted to let you know how deeply this story moved me and to thank you for creating it."
Wow. This one left me speechless, and thankful. I had done my job, which is to make you feel like you've dropped feet first into a world that captures your imagination and emotions so vividly you might be living and breathing the story. And that's one of the purest joys of reading, isn't it? I know it is for me, and it is my hope to continue to write books that make you live and breathe the adventure, laugh and cry, and that touch your heart.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2020Numerous emotional issues and genuine reactions make the first book in the Walker Creek Brides series constantly entertaining, and any situation that crops up had me wanting to discover its ultimate outcome. Miriam Minger interweaves lots of realism into her historical romance. The vivid details had me feeling as though I had been transported back to a time in America which was much different in some ways yet also the same during other instances, especially when it came to how a person responded to someone else. Life was not always easy for a woman in the late 1800’s, and the various challenges that Kari often faced proved she was a strong woman for this time period by how she behaved. Seth has also undergone more than his share of trials since very young, and wanting to see if these two could triumph over any predicaments that arose kept me reading straight through.
Right before Kari Hagen’s mother passed away, she gave her daughter a letter that was to be taken to Walker Creek, Texas. The only information told to her is a man living there was truly loved by her parent long ago, and this important message needs to be brought to him. The train ride from Minnesota to Texas goes well, but upon reaching her destination, deciding how to locate the unknown man leaves Kari stumped. Luckily, Seth Davis has come into town from nearby Walker Creek Ranch, and he offers his assistance as she seems so unsure standing by herself. What happens afterward is not at all how she thought the journey would turn out.
Reading about a time in history that I can only imagine is made all the more enjoyable by unforeseen developments and a cast of assorted characters. Kari comes in contact with quite a few people once she arrives in Texas, and their personalities are definitely diverse. Seeing how she interacted with each person let me come to know her better, and it was fun watching her and Seth strike up some interesting conversations. I liked how a touch of inspiring moments made the story come across as heartening. Rating – 4.5 Stars

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019Isn't the cover beautiful? Opening this book I knew I was settling in for a lovely afternoon read. Not only was I not disappointed, I was delighted by the author's skill at crafting an adventure and a mystery. This short novella introduces us to a lovely young woman who receives the shock of her life, meets the love of her life and has her world turned upside down - all within a day of stepping off the train in the middle of Texas. Of course there is a villain, introduced with just one clever sentence. "Please, help yourself she murmured, struck that a man so young would already be leaning toward corpulence, but then again, one had only to look at his portly parents." We have learned that the family is greedy and our heroine is in the middle of their path. The mystery? I have already preordered the last two books guessing that the mystery will be uncovered. Don't miss this comforting and exciting well written trilogy - look for the beautiful covers!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019This series looked good but turned out to be disappointing. It's definitely not worth the price
The best part of this story was Seth and Kari's original meeting. Those first few chapters with them were the absolute best part of this entire story. Sadly the rest of the story didn't measure up and it gets disappointing and keeps crashing down until the end just blows up into one big disappointment.
The writing was on the wall on why Kari was travelling to see Caleb. It seemed to be some big secret but then the reveal was like a busted balloon that just sputtered along. Why the build up to something that was obvious only leading up to a ho-hum reveal?
Then Caleb's behavior was outrageous. His anger was understandable and I would've liked it.....to a point. But instead he became cartoon character villain. He wasn't believable at all which made the redemption at the end which was more told to you then shown not to be a reward at all. Caleb was a bad man that had no redeeming qualities but all of a sudden in a flash he appears to change into a good honorable man? No sorry it didn't work for me.
His violence toward Seth was too much, his flippant treatment of Kari by dressing her up like a china baby doll was disrespectful and I won't even get into his treatment of his hired help. His redemption as I mentioned was more told to you. But it wasn't completely told. Did he ever change and treat his hired help as human beings or were they still "just the hired help and you don't be kind to them" attitude he had from the beginning. His rich snobbery was too much and since he owned the town it didn't make him end up as an honorable man.
Then there is the fact he did to Kari what happened to him. Would he really do that to her? I have a hard time believing he was THAT evil. Again he was written as a cartoon villain and it was more laughable then serious.
The reunion between Seth and Kari should've been more. Was this even a romance? I felt this story was more about Kari and finding out who Caleb was. It was hard to feel the romance because of the distractions, especially since they didn't get any special time at the reunion. I mean if Kari can give instant forgiveness to Caleb for his outrageous evil mean behavior and threats to kill Seth then she should've been able to do the same for Seth. Since she couldn't the ho-hum reunion was not rewarding enough for a romance. Then we don't even get a proposal. Again was this even a romance? We just get an expectation of marriage. That was no different than what Caleb did to her but this is okay because they are in love. Really? Again this romance that started out so promising became a loud thud at this point.
Then the ending with the wedding. It was so hard to continue reading at this point and to know it was not a wedding for a building romance you were reading in the beginning made it all that much harder. Again no indication of the time from the reunion and no chapters addressing Caleb's change. Just the fact that again he dressed her up like a china doll for her wedding and "spared no expense" as a way to show he changed. Don't tell me that was really written in the book? Materialistic things do NOT prove someone changed. Their actions do. But we didn't get action in this book so no surprise that line actually was in the book. Paraphrasing or not it was there.
I saw more punch in a short novella then I saw in this book. This book needed about 5 more chapters to make it flesh out. It was too short and the character development was non-existent and the romance was barely there.
I don't think this is a town I care to revisit. Kari was such a humble person when she showed up. But at the end she became the rich snobbery princess china doll that Caleb had groomed her into becoming. I wanted a humble love story for Seth and Kari that the first few chapters had hinted. Sadly I didn't get it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2023This was a really quick read which I enjoyed. The main character of the story Kari Received a letter from her mother just before she passed and her mother had asked her to deliver to her old boyfriend. It was pretty much as I thought the mothers old boyfriend was indeed her real father. That came in the shock to her. After that things changed fast.
