Switchback: A Patrick Flint Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 4,241 ratings

Fans of Yellowstone and Joe Pickett will love this riveting mystery set in 1970s Wyoming

All Patrick Flint wants is a peaceful getaway in the Wyoming mountains. He’s grown weary of the bicentennial celebrations, the angry families of patients, the rash of campers coming down from the mountains high on speed, and the midnight call-outs to cover for the town veterinarian.

But Flint’s family vacation takes a horrifying turn when his daughter Trish disappears—along with their camp, horses, and truck. Is she a runaway, or has she been kidnapped? The answer lies deep in the wilds of the mountains. And with a storm threatening to wipe out any trace of her, Flint must embrace his inner warrior, navigate treacherous terrain, and confront a deadly threat. With his family fragmented and time running out, it’s a desperate, heart-pounding race to rescue his daughter before the wilderness swallows her whole.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Transports readers deep into the mountains of Wyoming for a thriller that has it all--wild animals, criminals, and one family willing to do whatever is necessary to protect its own. Hutchins writes with the authority of a woman who knows this world. She weaves the story with both nail-biting suspense and a healthy dose of humor. You won't want to miss it." -- Danielle Girard, Wall Street Journal-bestselling author of White Out

"As many twists and turns as a high-country trail. Every parent's nightmare is the loss or injury of a child, and this powerful novel taps into that primal fear." -- Reavis Z. Wortham, two time winner of The Spur and author of Hawke's Prey

"Starts at a gallop and had me holding on with both hands until the riveting finish. Highly atmospheric and nearly crackling with suspense. Highly recommend!" -- Libby Kirsch, Emmy awardwinning reporter and author of the Janet Black Mystery Series

"Best book I've read in a long time!" -- Kiersten Marquet, author of Reluctant Promises

Love the chance to read another of Pamela's books
I found the book to be a very good read. Very detailed in her descriptions and emotions, I could actually see myself saying the same thing or doing the same to my parents when they dragged me along. Very good story of family and mystery.

Switchback is the first novel in a series titled Patrick Flint. I was into this tale before the middle of chapter one and couldn't put it down until it was done. Personable protagonists, really despicable bad guys, immersion into glorious Wyoming wilderness - who could ask for anything more? Patrick Flint is a medical physician in 1976 at a small hospital in the Yellowstone National Park border town of Buffalo, Wyoming. Buffalo is so small Patrick often takes off-duty calls for the hospital and the local veterinarian at the same time.

Patrick, his wife Suzanne, and their two children, Trish 15 years old, and Perry 11, are only two years out of the Dallas, Texas metro complex, so they are thoroughly enjoying the wilderness and their small-town experiences including horses. With the exception of Suzanne, who is a girly woman and doesn't really fit in with the more wilderness-oriented lifelong ladies of smalltown Wyoming. Hunting and fishing are not in her wheelhouse, nor doesn't she enjoy doing without the finer things in life - nice clothes, shopping, indoor toilets, and taking long bubble baths. Sleeping in a tent on the ground is not her idea of a good time. Horses now - she's a Texas girl so she loves horses. So there is that. But she probably would be happiest if the prospect of returning to her extended family and home back in Dallas was in their future.

Fortunately for Patrick, both kids love the whole wilderness experience and are of an age to master the things he loves about the change in their latitude, longitude, and altitude. The mountains are becoming their homeland. But there are also bad things in the mountains, and these few days in the novel Switchback are filled with them. Be ready for a compelling, fast-action ride. Pamela Fagan Hutchins will take you there. I can't wait for the next one, titled Snake Oil.

I love a good thriller, but come on…home invasion, kidnapping, drugs, mountain lions…..too far fetched for me.

Basically the book is a good read. Family goes camping and all heck breaks loose and daughter goes missing. Back at home, mom experiences something terrible. Family united at the end.

The book reads smoothly and the characters are individuals, though the descriptions of the dad make it seem like there is more violence hidden away in him than the book really uses. There is lots of character development here, and while there is no "mystery" there is tension and action. The action scenes are brief and not bloody. Language is very clean.

I think this is sort of a Hallmark adventure. The girl sort of gets religion during her trauma and everything works out even though the one murderer at one point takes a youngish woman in a bathrobe hostage and is all along with her in the woods....... but does nothing. Really? A respectful murderer? OK.

The children are as annoying as real teens. Of course they do everything they are not supposed to and that causes terrible problems.

But all is forgiven in the end and the family is all safe and grateful and back in their happy place. It all just seems a little unreal and too wholesome.......at least for me.

So this can easily read by teenagers as well as adults but may be better for kids who want an action thriller without all the sex, sexism, violence and male blustering that goes along with most mystery action books.

I'll read the next one, but if the kids don't shape up I am out of here.
