Dead Woman Crossing: A totally heart-stopping crime thriller (Detective Kimberley King Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 7,036 ratings

‘Brilliant – oh my word you can book after book after book but every so often a gem will emerge and this is one of them…. Totally blown away with how good the storyline is… and that conclusion, never saw it coming!’ Goodreads Reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

She threw open the door, running to the crib. When she looked inside, she gasped. The world around her went silent. Inside, there was nothing but a small stuffed elephant. Where was her baby?

When young, single mother Hannah is found murdered by the banks of a twisting Oklahoma creek, her one-year-old daughter sleeping in a stroller near her body, the small town of Dead Woman Crossing reels in horror.

Detective Kimberley King, recently relocated from New York to Oklahoma, with her young daughter Jessica, can’t ignore the similarity of Hannah’s death to the case of Katie James, the woman that the town of Dead Woman Crossing is named after. Katie was murdered in front of her small daughter in 1905, on the banks of the same creek, and it seems that someone is drawing inspiration from the crime. Could this killer be a copycat?

But as she interviews suspects, Kimberley is met with blank faces and closed lips. In a small town, people won’t talk and when she pursues a promising lead, her own family turn their back on her. Kimberley isn’t afraid to ask questions, but when she receives a threatening note, she realises that, as a single mother to a young daughter, she might be putting herself dangerously in the killer’s sights …

An absolutely unputdownable crime thriller inspired by true events from an Amazon bestselling author. Dead Woman Crossing is perfect for fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Jane Harper.

Binge-worthy with an ending you never see coming!
The start of a new series, J.R. Adler introduces us to Kimberly King. A former NYPD Homicide Detective looking to lower the risk factor of her life to be there for her little girl, Jessica. She moves to Dead Woman's Crossing, to reconnect with her mom and help her daughter create bonds with her family. She is expecting little hustle and bustle in this small town but after a day on the job a murder is called in and she starts to feel like she's back in New York for all the wrong reasons. The reason Kimberley leaves New York is not entirely clear. Of course she wants more time with her 16 month old daughter but something else seems to be lingering in the back of her mind. The reader is given flashbacks of her life back in New York soon and throughout the story you learn more about her past and why she wanted to be as far away from New York as she could get.I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! I love detective stories and Kimberley is such a strong main character who is striving to be a successful detective and a mom. I was drawn in from the very first page and was totally engrossed until the very surprising ending! I cannot wait for the next one to come out!

Jeneva Rose delivers a masterclass in suspense with Dead Woman Crossing, a chilling and atmospheric thriller that keeps you hooked from the very first page. Set in a small Oklahoma town with a dark past, the novel expertly blends true crime elements with compelling fiction, creating a story that feels both real and utterly riveting.

The characters are well-drawn and believable, particularly the protagonist, Detective Kimberley King. Her determination to solve the mystery of a young mother’s brutal murder while grappling with her own personal struggles adds depth and emotional stakes to the narrative. The small-town setting is perfectly crafted, amplifying the tension and secrecy that permeates the story.

What truly sets this book apart is Rose's ability to weave intricate plot twists. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story veers in a completely unexpected direction. The pacing is spot-on, with each chapter leaving you eager to uncover the truth.

For fans of dark mysteries and psychological thrillers, Dead Woman Crossing is an absolute must-read. Jeneva Rose proves once again why she’s a powerhouse in the genre. Highly recommended!

Fetus & domestic violence abuse and graphic violence triggers

This stand-alone is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama. Not all questions are answered.

Intriguing storyline with descriptive writing that draws the reader into each scene. Very flexible procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities and emotional baggage. Thought-provoking dialogue.

    Recipes would be nice.

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in the rest of the series and other works by this author.

The first book I read from this author was ‘A Perfect Marriage.’ It was great! So I was excited to read another one from her. I found the main character annoying, almost petulant. She seemed ungrateful, and whiny.

It’s a decent story, but the drama and action seemed to ramp up out of no where and felt very forced. They tried to make minor situations major. Characters lacked depth and the story overall felt very flat. Certainly not a thriller. I was never tense or on the edge of my seat page turning to get to the end.

I will read the second book to see if it gets better bc the first book I read of hers was so much better than this one.

I really enjoyed this book by Jeneva Rose! I liked it so much I bought the second part as soon as I was finished. I can't wait for her to come out with a third. The story is engaging, interesting and keeps you guessing every chapter. I've always enjoyed reading books written by Jeneva Rose but this one might be one of my favorites by her.

This is the second book I've read by this author and it wasn't as good as the first. After it got going it was pretty good, but at 35% in nothing had really happened except Kimberly (the main character) moved from NYC to a rural town in Oklahoma. A fully 1/3 of the book was her adjustment to life in the country. One or two chapters would have been plenty of background. There was a tad of hinted tension between Kimberly and her step-dad whom she had never met, but that was it. Boring!! But after it got going and there was a murder, the book moved along and got pretty interesting. Actually, a weak 4 stars.

At the very beginning of this book, I had my suspicions out what would happen. Reading more into the book. My suspicion had changed at who would commit what crime. But in the end, my first instincts were correct.
When Kimberly moves from New York to a small town, her life is supposed to be easier and move more smoothly for her and her daughter making time more time to be with her daughter. After coming to heads with different personalities with her new family, she finds herself and a peculiar spot.
This book is not only well written and smooth easy-going as it is also interesting and keeps you going. Beware there is a little bit of gruesome detail and some of the murders but nothing one can’t handle..
This is the second book. I have read by this author, and I believe I will continue to keep reading more of her stories as her imagination has a little bit of fact and a little bit of where will it go thinking. Very well told story flows through smoothly.

For the whole time I was just waiting when things would happen. The book starts off with laying some ground work but it is stretched out too much. Instead of a thriller book it felt more like a daily diary. Less of the thrilling part more of a regular daily life part.

The name of Dead Woman Crossing refers to a murder decades ago. When a young single mother is found in exactly the same circumstances the town reels in shock. Kimberley joins the local police force and she and her boss try to solve the mystery. Kimberley also has to deal with her mother who appears to have taken to drink, and her step-family who are not very friendly. On top of this she is a single mother which puts extra pressure on her settling in to her new job and home. Starts out as a nice book, but has hidden depths of nastiness which appear after the murder. Well written.
