The Hellborn King (The Hellborn King Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 105 ratings

A kingdom at war. A royal family at war with itself.

After the massacre of his people, Damien Dreadfire leads a patchwork army of unlikely allies against the Kingdom of Betanthia. The alliance teeters on the edge of a knife, as old rivalries between clans threaten to tear it apart. With the help of his trusted friend, Einarr, and a strange mystic, Damien launches a bold offensive that will decide the future of the free lands. Short on time, and even shorter on men, the fate of a once vibrant culture and its people rests on the outcome of the next battle.

Meanwhile, Betanthia's crown prince, Gareth Bethard, faces dangers of his own. With his family coming apart at the seams and a growing conspiracy afoot, he tries desperately to hold everything together. Even as Gareth grapples with inner demons, he must learn to take up his father's mantle as the protector of civilization and defeat Damien’s invading horde. It's only the fate of a thousand-year dynasty resting on his shoulders, after all.

"The ending was so exciting that I can't wait to read the next volume!"-The Reading Stray

" It was an investment that plagued my waking moments and I rushed to get back to reading as often as I could... It's one of the best fantasy stories that I have had the pleasure of reading."
-Yvonne, Fanfiaddict.com

"This is a Grimdark epic worthy of your time and one of the better ones I have read in a long time. Pain will be felt but also the hope of something better on the horizon. I hope you will join me on this dark path. Who knows where it may lead! "
-Blaise Ancona, Fanfiaddict.com

"This easily makes its way onto my recommended reading, it's a grimdark story that is brutal but shines in it's quieter moments. It had everything I looked for in fantasy, some wonderful characters and an intriguing world and what's better is there is going to be more as well. I really enjoyed the slow burn approach as it allowed for some effective world building and characterisation and is the first grimdark book I have picked up for sometime."
-Peter, The Swordsmith

Phenomenal tale!!

Phenomenal tale!!
... And that's a wrap!I finished reading The Hellborn King Book 1, an Epic Fantasy novel the other day, and wow! What a phenomenal tale!!!A really good tale should remove me from my current space and time and immerse me so fully into the tale itself that I interact with the characters on a deeper level of connection. One where if they were able to respond to me, we would forge bonds and alliances or fight to the death based on our morals and values. A really good tale should be an escape and a place I long to dive into. With this tale, the web was so fully cast and articulated that the characters interplay with one another captured exactly what I love about escaping into books. I enjoyed hallucinating for hours with visions created by powerful words strung together in a symphony, enhanced with emotions and my own thoughts about the sometimes dire situations the characters faced. This tale was superb!Coming from a huge book nerd like me, who read and re-read the Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and every book my favorite author, R.A. Salvatore wrote, Christopher's composition is bound to bring a discerning audience of wordsmith fans for many years to come.I am eager to continue the saga and anxiously await Book 2 of The Hellborn King!

    al, Compelling, and awesome!!!

Looking for a multi POV dark military campaign with dynamic broken characters look no further. I am just upset I waited so long to read this fantastic debut.

A broken royal family a kingdom in decline and a Warlord hell bent on revenge for past wars are just some of what you will find in Hellborn king.

From the first chapter this book grabs you and takes you on a wild ride.

5/5 great morally grey flawed characters, political maneuvering, and awesome battles. I have nothing but praise for Hellborn King!!!

One of my big goals this year was to read and support Indie Authors. The Hellborn King is the debut of Indie author Christopher G. Brenning. Who also so happens to be a Wisconsin native from where I am from. So that's a double win for me.

Anyway, Hellborn King was brilliant from beginning to end. This fantasy is very character driven with tons of political intrigue and scheming. There is a plot but I would say it is more of a foundation that drives the characters. Hellborn King is told through 7 main POVs and 2 very minor POVs. Gareth, Lucetta, Einar, Madelyn, and Titan are my favorite characters as they are the ones who have the biggest emotional arcs. Christopher's prose were excellent. He was able to craft a story to get utterly lost in. Believe it or not, this was not very action packed as I thought it was going to be. The action that we did get though was harrowing and brutal.

For why I cannot give this the full five stars as much as I want to, there was an aspect of the ending of this book did not sit well with me.

To say this book needs more readers and attention is an understatement. With book two just weeks away now is the perfect time to get caught up like I did. Please if this sounds at all interesting to anyone, pick this book up and show Christopher some love. Support Indies!

It’s not every day that a story grabs your soul so rabidly that you consume over 300 pages of it in a single day.

In these pages, Chris has crafted a wickedly barbaric tale with little mercy and oceans of blood. Every character’s heart hums with a song of metal, and what you will witness here is the opening act to a far greater epic.

    All hail the Hellborn King!

This book, the Hellborn King, had me hooked from the first page. The prologue invited a sense of intrigue and proved to be a wonderful introduction to the main character. I will not provide spoilers for the book as I suggest you read it, but needless to say it is an incredible journey. Highly recommend!

This was a good start to a series. The characters are ones I'm excited to keep following. I love that the author isn't afraid to have consequences for bad decisions. I felt like some of the chapters ran kinda long where they could've been shorter and more to the point. But that is a small complaint. I've got the next book and can't wait to start reading.

This was a debut and a half. From the stellar prologue all the way through to the end of the book I was gripped. None of the characters are your typical white hats/black hats they are all nuanced and while I didn’t like all of them I never begrudged the time spent with them. Add in some well written action scenes and this one was a winner.

A sort of angry Vikings vs medieval knights vibe going on here. Lots of very brutal action with a slightly unusual cast of characters. Not many of the characters are likeable and the good vs evil is given a bit of an ambiguous twist as there's real nastiness on both sides.
I found a few inconsistencies which slightly niggled but all in all it's a good story and I shall be giving the next book a go.

The board is set and the pieces are moving.
We get to know a lot of characters, their motives and get a glimpse at what happened in the past.
The present is building up to a war.
    The end of everything.
it isn't far good vs evil in any way shape or form. pretty grim and characters have to life with the
    consequences of their decisions.
Bring on Book 2: The Wrathbringer
