Always on the look-out for a good spy thriller, and having seen so many stellar reviews, I dove right into this Jack Storm series with Book #1. This series-starter opens with gut-wrenching action, and as the tale unfolds, the suspense builds organically to a masterful cliffhanger.

I'm not a big fan of shoot ‘em up scenes, but I'll make an exception for this author. Ethan Jones describes combat and skirmishes with a deft and informative attention to detail while keeping relevant to the story.

The real-life settings, this one taking place primarily in Turkey and Iran, are beautifully depicted. The world building of Jack Storm, valiant extractor on assignment from Canadian Intelligence service (CIS) rescuing assets from dangerous regions of unrest, is driven by the ultimate motivation. I love spy thrillers with heart, and this one has tons of it. I’m looking forward to reading Book 2!

Since the tender age of 12 (which was 33 years ago), I’ve read more than my fair share of action-adventure and spy novels featuring a hero who’s an operative for either the American CIA, British SIS (AKA MI-6), and Israeli Mossad...but this is the first one I’ve come across with a Canadian Secret Intelligence Service (CSIS; or, as the author calls it in the novel, simply Canadian Intelligence Service [CIS]). The hero, Jack Storm, has to overcome the grief of the loss of his wife and children—he stubbornly refuses to accept that their gone—that has sidelined him from the Service in order to extract (hence the title) a female asset trapped inside Iran...while breaking in a new partner and overcome trust issues within his old agency to boot.

An entertaining, taut, fast-paced, action-packed adventure. Well done, Ethan Jones, looking forward to reading the next few novels in the series, eh!

In this first book Mr. Jones sets the bar high as always for his new series! Jack Storm, an extractor for the CIS, is still reeling from the disappearance of his wife and daughter in a mysterious plane crash, when he is pulled into a recovery action for a key asset trapped in Tehran. He is paired with a brash rookie who reminds Jack of himself starting out. Jack has to rely on his training, experience and instincts, more so than imbedded contacts who will turn on you at the slightest whim. Is that enough to keep himself alive, in one piece, and make the mission a success?

This is a well-written, fast-paced story with strong characters that pulled me in and kept me reading to the finish. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed several of Ethan’s other series, and I’m eager to read the rest of this one. He continues to prove that a writer can produce great action-packed books using clean language, no sex scenes, and without overly graphic descriptions of blood and guts. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion. I purchased a copy on release to support this outstanding author.

To keep what identity he still has that links him to the life he had just a short time ago he NEEDS to complete this mission. But first he has to prove that he has the mental stability to even start the mission much less complete it.

First up control your temper and don't kill the partner you've just been assigned. That just may be Jack's next problem...

This hero doesn't have a chip on his shoulder it just looks that way. Sometimes you have to break the rules rather than just bend them.

The Extractor was my introductions to Ethan Jones writing, and I must say I’m now a fan. Along with creating a character – Jack Storm – who is tortured, fallible and just a human as they come, he created a backstory that is so compelling you want to read the rest just to find out if he ever gets closure on the question of his family’s demise or survival. As for the story, there is enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat and enough periods of bureaucratic interaction to give you enough space to catch your breath but not enough to get bored.
