About the author
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Melissa Storm is happiest with a book in her hands and a pet on her lap.
Her most exciting adventures have always been born of her own “overactive imagination,” a burden which often got her into trouble as a child. Now that she’s grown, that same naughty brain keeps her busy writing in a number of genres that include Women’s Fiction and Psychological Thrillers. Her stories dive deep into themes of mental health, friendship, and community, topics that are particularly close to her big (but anxious) heart.
Melissa lives in the heart of Alaska with her husband, child, and a lively domestic zoo brimming with spoiled cats and dogs. She dreams of one day raising bees in her backyard, but has promised her daughter that she will resist this particular temptation. For now.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2022Every one! It's true, you whether mean to or not. But sometimes once a lie is told ,you're caught in it either on purpose by lying consistently , or sometimes the lye just grows on its own over time by happenings that keep adding to it and you never correct the lie and it just keeps escalating! That is what this book is about!
Sophia started out doing something to help a dog in distress and in really bad shape for its life! This is a really good book, well written, great characters, wonderful storyline and keeps you turning the pages! Plus touches on a good one of life's lessons we all go through unfortunately! (If we are honest with ourselves, yes, we each do) A good book for teens also!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024The choices Sofia made were for good reasons, but were bad choices. I was close to giving up on her, but then she took responsibility for them. After that I enjoyed the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023What a story! Sofia with a heart so big. She would never steal. But she needed food for Wolfie. She asked a friend never realizing he would ask for a shirt from her shop. Then he insisted she go to a bar to meet some of his friends. The first person she sees is Hunter the cop she met at the Vets. He wants to get to know her. If only she had met him before her life of crime.
How will this ever straighten out and Hunter get his girl? You need to read this book well worth your time.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024I caught myself arguing with Sophie thru most of this story but she didn't seem to listen. I was so concerned about her and what would happen next. Couldn't believe it would happen, it was like she finally heard me! I love the characters and the sweet ending!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2018This is not my favorite book by Mrs. Storm and I’ll explain why.
Sofia wasn’t the most likable person. I never connected. She stole. Now, the dognapping, you could see as rescuing. But the stealing of the supplies? That kept bothering me. It may be a petty crime but it was wrong, so wrong! She should’ve found another solution! I immediately distanced myself from her. More reasons why I didn’t like her are in the three spoilers below.
So, I didn’t much care for Sofia. I didn’t like her so-called friends. I started out not liking Hunter either, but later he got better (kinder, less alpha male) and I started liking him. But there wasn’t even a lot of interaction between Hunter and Sofia. I would have liked it to be more about that, more about the romance, but the book was very much about the wrong choices Sofia made. And yes, some good choices too; they weren’t all bad, especially later on. The end of the book was really, really good! If the whole book would have had the vibe of the end, it could have been so much better. Now, no more than OK. Even Wolfie (the dog) couldn’t lift the story enough to save it. And that surprised me! I am used to Melissa Storm’s characters touching my heart and really feeling them! I’m sorry to say that this book wasn’t her best…
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
1: The way she rescued the dogs was very spur-of-the-moment, without even knowing enough, without telling the police. That bothered me most: because she never involved the police, the people behind it weren’t caught. By rescuing the dogs Sofia didn’t solve anything, in fact, she made it even worse: because those people are just going to get new dogs!!! So in the end MORE dogs will suffer! Sofia’s methods were a perfect example of short term thinking without looking at the longer term effects. It was nowhere near the right way to handle things. Unintentionally but surely she made things worse.
2: Giving Fanta/Foxie/Delilah to Elizabeth Jane knowing what she did? Cruel beyond words because she KNEW the dog couldn’t stay there and she KNEW Liz would get attached to the dog. A rotten thing to do!
3: Sofia seriously considered selling drugs for money. This is wrong in so so so many ways! Some things simply can NOT be justified. Why not think of legitimate ways like crowdfunding or something like that? That she would even consider such an option made her so much less likable to me! That was the point where I almost gave up on this book. Now, she does learn and better herself. She never went through with this ridiculous plan, I’m happy to say. She does own up to what she did, so kudos for that. Glad I didn’t actually give up on the book, because the end turned out really nice, but still.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2024A quick read, Society rescued a dog, then one more The last one a mistake. You need to read this short story.,especially if you love dogd.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2022Sofia returns to us looking for love and companionship. When driving home in a rainstorm she funds the starving, lonely dog she has seen chained with no food or water making dad whimpers in the drenching rain. This is the beginning of her life changing events that turn her world around. Another of Storm's heartwarming books in her Alaska Hearts series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2023I have fallen in love with the people in this series. The books are well written. I love the animals in all the stories and their connection to the people in the books. I recommend this series

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as the other books in the series
I enjoyed all the previous books in the series but this one did not grab me the way the other did. I think Sofia breaking the law on several occasions seemed exaggerated to me.
Hunter was a strong character but i really cannot see how a police officer would forgive all her misdemeanours. All a bit too far fetched. However I did love the dogs in he story and the characters from the previous books.
