I received this collection as an ARC but the opinions are my own

Six quick stories of jaded men haunted by their pasts and the vibrant women who could pull them into the present. Each story has distinct settings, tones, and tantalizing glimpses at what a new author has to offer. I was left wanting more! Each is so unique and fun and I couldn't read fast enough. If you like tough, broody men and the women who could tempt them, give this a try!

    Angel of La Seine
The author really nails the noir voice with quick, snappy prose. It really paints a picture of time, place, and the hero's past.

    In the Dead of Night
This story moves into a more contemporary tone, bringing us pieces of a man unable to shake a captivating woman from his past. This is a bit darker story that blends the past and present.

    Behind the 8 ball
This one is my favorite! The hero has a bit of a chip in his shoulder, always assuming the next slight. It was so engaging with potent chemistry between them. Once again past and present are woven together masterfully in this story of intrigue and reunions.

    Stark homecoming
This one is about a man who returns to his biggest regret to attempt to make amends. But ten years is plenty of time for things to change. Luckily, some things never do.

    The Nightmare
A take on Sherlock Holmes, this is a twisting tale of puzzles and pasts. Maxem and the daughter of the recently deceased Dr. Watson attempt to unravel a mystery in this gripping, action-packed short.

    A Fool to Hold You
This story once again transport the reader to a different time, now with political intrigue. It's romantic and redeeming, an excellent conclusion for this collection of stories.

Angel of La Seine – Very vividly detailed. Felt almost Gatsby like and could really picture being in the gambling room

In the dead of the night – Builds anticipation extremely well. Couldn’t put this one down. Would very much like a longer story version here. Flashbacks were done well also

Behind the eight ball - Loved this story. It felt so real from start to finish. The strained relationship and the way the characters interacted was very well put together. Honor is a completely believable military man from the way he thinks to the way he acts.

Stark homecoming – This was my least favorite story. It was good, but it felt like it didn’t quite have the detailed eye the author had in the other stories. Maybe it was just the paramilitary assassin part that was a little less relatable.

The nightmare – Really enjoyed the spy/mystery solving aspects twisted together. Felt like a new age Bond meets Sherlock Homes. Refreshingly different.

A food to hold you – Great way to end the collection. Can picture this being a much longer story between the two. The setting was perfect as well. Really well done.

First off, kudos to Author J. Rose Black. She has an easy-to-read writing style that culminated in a compelling collection of six noir-ish tales that include mystery/suspense and romance. I enjoyed them all; particularly In the Dead of the Night, Behind the Eight Ball, and most especially Stark Homecoming. My only complaint is that some of the stories (like Stark Homecoming) ended a bit too abruptly. Granted, a short story is far from a novel in content, but when the reason behind the plot is left unresolved, it leaves the reader (me, anyway, since I—even in this brief of a story—was emotionally involved with the characters) frustrated. For example, were Stellan and Verity able to escape successfully and was he able to save her father? It didn't need to be a long explanation... just a few words.

For the overall style of writing, the author's imagination, and the superb editing, I'd give Vengefully Yours a hearty 5 stars. It only loses a star because some of the stories left me hanging. I'd love to encourage Ms. Black to consider writing longer versions of these shorts to 'finish' the stories. I, for one, would most definitely be a reader!

Let’s say an experienced and highly accomplished author is not particularly concerned about winning over readers; let them think what they may. She adeptly turns out six steamy, noir, longish first chapters in appropriately striking settings—an upscale gangster eatery in Los Angeles, 1937; some gritty back streets in contemporary London, etc. Her characters are all men and women in various stages of recovery from unrequited love tinged with deepest regret—mixed with other complicated feelings usually having to do with family. In fact, each of the six “chapters” is stuffed with more atmospheric scenery and churning emotions than one finds in entire novels.

Now she puts them between two covers, calls them short stories, and waits to see what will happen. In fact, J. Rose Black seems to have done something like that in “Vengefully Yours.” While some readers might be entranced by the unresolved unknowns, she left me wondering why her stories offer so much background information only to fall off a cliff/hit a brick wall. Perhaps these are meant to be the equivalents of movie trailers.

Vengefully yours is a collection of short stories from enemies to lovers to second chances, full of suspense, mystery, secrets, and lovers finding one another or finding their way back to each other. The settings are in different cities, countries, and decades.

There are six short stories, and I enjoyed every one of them. They are fast-paced, and their small world built to perfection. The reader can feel the tension and the undeniable chemistry between the characters. My favorite couples are Honor and Aurelie, their pull to be together and all the suspense about the situation of her family. Also, Stellan and Verity. His struggles with mental health, all his insecurities for seeing his love again after so many years, and doing everything he can to protect her captured my heart just like his name. Beautiful.

This collection of tales is fun to read, and their endings reminded me somewhat of The Twilight Zone. If you appreciate quick reads with wonderful characters, lots of love, angst and suspense in the mix, that leave you wishing for more, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Writing Should Be!
Reviewed in Canada on June 18, 2023
Wow, wow, wow! There is just so much I can say about this book! I am absolutely in love with J Rose Black’s writing style! This is the way storytelling should be! Captivating words that just flow off the page, an effortless read start to finish!

I just love her characters. They’re all so believably real, they have depth, they have their flaws, and you just connect and feel right along with them.

I’m blown away by her word choice. She has such a delicate touch in painting the picture of each scene. With a wonderful turn of phrase, that doesn't need unnecessary words that could clutter up the narrative.

She’s not afraid to shy away from difficult situations, and have her characters face up to their demons. What I love most is how she handles the tensions and conflicts.

Nothing is conflict or strife just for the sake of driving a wedge between the characters. But also nothing is just tossed aside too easily. It’s all so grounded and real, J Rose Black really gets human interactions, and the voices of her characters sound true because of that.

I wanted to speak more specifically about one of the stories in this collection, and it was super hard to choose just one! In the Dead of Night, I just love this story! The atmosphere created in this story is just so raw and real! J Rose Black draws you along with Rye through the story. His protective nature is so clear! He’s been forced to do terrible things in order to survive, but that didn’t stop him from doing right for Larissa!

I love getting to witness the war within Rye. That need to protect, but to remain distant. The obvious attraction for Larissa that developed over the years, and his being convinced he’s done enough damage to her life already. He’s a broken human being, so real and relatable.

J Rose Black shows her versatility in this collection of quick reads! And showed me that it didn’t matter if she was writing a first person period detective story, or a modern romance, or even a modern mystery. I would be happily captivated by each word!

Fantastic writing. Well worth sinking into these noir fantasy romance stories, especially if you enjoy short tales. The author definitely has talent, though at times it seems a little raw. Saying that, these are some of the best stories have read in a long while. I highly recommend you give them a go.
