The Dead Don't Talk (Detective Jack Husker Crime Thrillers Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

The ghosts of darkness are not just in your mind.

DI Jack Husker has been humiliated. Shamed in court, his reputation has been dragged through the gutter. Accused of pursuing a personal vendetta against a notorious crime boss, Jack is removed from front-line duties. With his career over, he is assigned to a desk job searching for missing persons.

A simple case soon focuses eyes back on Jack. A series of witnesses disappear from the city’s streets. Each is linked to him, leaving questions being asked of the detective. It puts Jack back under the microscope and pushes his DCI to the limit.

Set in the beautiful city of York, this is DI Jack Husker’s second outing in a case that was never supposed to be a murder.

In the misty darkness, nobody heard the screams as two more souls were gathered from the city’s streets.

Alex Robert has lived most of his life in and around the outskirts of York. He is a family man, with a long-held passion for writing, who grew up unsure of what career path to follow. While writing has always been his first love, it disappeared into the fog that is real life, leaving him to forge a moderately successful career in an office. Having spent twenty years finding reasons not to put pen to paper, he finally took the plunge and has never regretted the decision.

His first novel Death Sketches was a story that has been bubbling away in his head for too many years. Alex openly admits it came as a relief to finally see the characters brought to life.

The characters and locations in his books are inspired by people and places he has met and seen, supplemented with an imaginative twist. For now, his books will continue to be based around a city he loves though Alex has not ruled out spreading his wings further afield, depending on where his characters choose to take him.

There will be plenty more adventures for some of the characters in the book while others will meet an unfortunate end. That allows the books to stay fresh and new characters to be introduced even if some of the demises might be sudden. With tongue in cheek, Alex offers the view that it prevents undue suffering on their part. In truth, it is designed to keep readers enthralled.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely loved reading this book.

This is the second in a series of crime thrillers set in York. While it can stand alone just fine, reading the books in order always provides better context and understanding of the long-term character arcs.

I appreciated how the long-term plot of the series plays into the specific problems in this story. The arch-nemesis is lurking on the periphery, and I was always waiting for the other foot to drop. That is one of the best reasons to read this genre and I love it when it is well done. It took a bit of time for me to feel a connection to Jack, but I came to appreciate his anti-hero qualities and how they played into the story. By the end, I was 100 % on Team Husker.

I plan to recommend this book to all my friends and family who read crime thrillers. Well done.

The Dead Don't Talk is a gripping crime thriller that delves into the dark and mysterious world of DI Jack Husker. After a devastating blow to his reputation, Jack is stripped of his frontline duties and relegated to a desk job focused on finding missing persons. However, a string of disappearances linked to Jack puts him back in the spotlight and under intense scrutiny.

Set against the atmospheric backdrop of the beautiful city of York, this second installment of the Detective Jack Husker Crime Thrillers takes readers on a chilling journey through the shadows. As the investigation unfolds, the tension rises, and the stakes become higher. Jack finds himself at the center of a complex web of secrets and deception, where the ghosts of darkness haunt both the city streets and his own mind.

Author Alex Robert skillfully weaves a tale of suspense, intrigue, and personal redemption. The atmospheric descriptions bring the setting to life, immersing readers in the misty darkness and palpable tension. Jack's character is well-developed, flawed yet determined, as he navigates the treacherous paths of crime and corruption.

With each turn of the page, The Dead Don't Talk keeps readers guessing and on the edge of their seats. The plot unfolds with expert pacing, keeping the suspense building until the final, jaw-dropping revelation. This crime thriller is a compelling addition to the Detective Jack Husker series, and fans of the genre will find themselves thoroughly engrossed in this gripping tale of mystery and intrigue.

Good read. I enjoy a good mystery. The one is good. Interesting characters and relationships among them. Plot full of action twists and turns. Good Police procedurals. All together an enjoyable read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The detective is hard-boiled and gets dragged into a case he wasn't sure he wanted. Find out what happened to a couple. Are they dead, missing, or off having a grand old time? The characters are well-defined and the story ebbs and flows like the ocean, drawing you deeper into the water. Well worth your time.

Set in the historic city of York, Alex Robert’s The Dead Don’t Talk combines wonderfully described scenes and well-rounded characters to deliver a page-turning crime thriller. The second installment in the Detective Jack Husker Crime Thrillers series sees our endearingly gruff protagonist relegated to the Missing Persons Unit, publicly shamed and with his reputation in tatters. Refusing to merely exist quietly in the forgotten corners of the police department, DI Jack Husker jumps full-on into a missing persons case, convinced he has a murder on his hands. Though his superior is initially skeptical, when witnesses start disappearing, Jack is let off- leash to do what he does best. With his previous partner still out of commission, and time running out for a young girl, Jack once again pairs up with DS Lisa Ramsey in a bid to solve the case before it’s too late. Though written as the second book in the series, The Dead Don’t Talk can be read as a stand-alone. Rich in detail and easy to follow, nothing is lost if readers start the series here. However, I still highly recommend reading the first book in the series, Death Sketches, as it was also a great read.

DI Jack Husker has been put through the wringer lately. He was disgraced in court and drug through the mud for supposedly pursuing a personal vendetta against a local crime boss. After the falling out he is put on desk duty with the police department and is relegated to coming files about missing persons. Jack stumbles upon several cases that seem to tie together and he decides to investigate. Can he solve the cases and redeem himself?
