A Vengeful Realm: The Scales of Balance - Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

Peace bought by blood seldom lasts, for vengeance knows no end. The same is true for mortals and Gods alike. Decades, centuries, eras may pass, but the cycle remains. As war and revolution rise again, Zephyrus finds himself at the center of it all. Chosen by the Gods, hailed as a prophet of liberation, and forged as a weapon to break the kingdom and restore balance to the realm, hope rests squarely on his shoulders.

If only he could remember…

Enslaved as a gladiator and thrust into a prince’s game of espionage, Zephyrus has only two clues to help unlock his shattered past: a prophecy foretelling destruction, and a letter to the enemy king, promising peace. Now Zephyrus must survive the dangers of the gladiatorial arena, the cunning fury of the Prince’s enemies, and the Gods’ torment if he is to find the truth of his identity and fulfill his fate. But to have any hope of breaking the cycle, first he must secure his freedom—and not just from his slavers.

Within this vengeful realm, a queen protecting her kingdom, a prince defending his father, and a gladiator slave haunted by a prophecy each contend for their own brand of freedom. But the Gods have an agenda of their own, and they'll use any vessel—patrician, plebeian, or slave—to see it done.

The scales must be balanced. By peace. Or by blood.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Arena-set action sequences shine ... but even more impressive is the constant political maneuvering, as characters mingle with enemies while plotting against them. There is, of course, plenty of mystery, and Facciola amps up excitement with signs of magic, appearances from gods, and betrayals."— Kirkus Reviews

"A captivating fantasy with strong characters and even stronger combat scenes ... It is difficult to overstate the storytelling prowess of author Tim Facciola." —
Independent Book Review

★★★★½
"A sprawling cast of vivid characters and a meticulously crafted realm, with exposition and world-building unraveling seamlessly alongside the plot...an original work of fantasy that doesn't trod familiar ground" —

From the Author

This series has been a labor of love for ten years. Inspired by the imaginative works of Brandon Sanderson, the gut-wrenching characterization of Joe Abercrombie, and the deep lore of George RR Martin's stories, this series has changed my life. It is my hope that it can inspire others to want to create the same way these authors have inspired me. With so many great books to read and stories to get lost in, thank you for considering mine. May this world be the haven for you that it has been for me. Happy reading :)

When Tim isn’t writing epic fantasy, he can often be found in his garage-gym or in the mountains where he lives. A virtual fitness professional by trade, he integrates his creative passions into movement, training with maces, clubs, staves, and swords to unlock his inner gladiator.

More than writing, reading, gaming, playing music, hiking, and paddle-boarding, Tim loves story. If he’s not working on his own story, he’s helping others develop theirs as an author coach.

Living in Arizona with his wife, Colleen, Tim continues writing epic fantasy novels while exploring different storytelling mediums so he can inspire others to hope. To live. And to believe.

Fantastic political fantasy!
5 Stars
Fantastic political fantasy!
This is a fantastic political fantasy. It’s like 3-D chess. You have gods and politics and multiple agendas. Does the end justify the means? This fantasy looks at multiple viewpoints on slavery and what freedom means. What happens when on tenement of your beliefs tramples on another? Will you accept another point of view and grow from it? Oh the intrigue of this book. Great for slow readers or fast readers. Easy to digest chapters and multiple POV done exceptionally well. I recommend this to anyone who wants a good fantasy. Adults though, this can get slightly graphic in the violence of the gladiators.

4.5 / 5 ⭐️

What an incredible fantasy inspired by the Roman Empire! I'm so glad the author is rapidly releasing this series because I definitely don't want to wait long for book 2.

In this multi-POV novel, we follow characters across the board: Zephyrus, an enslaved gladiator who can't remember his past but knows he has a major role to play in the oncoming war; Laeden, a prince who is doing his best to keep the peace like his father; Danella, the queen of the realm who is moving her pawns in order to do the gods' bidding; Nallia, the daughter of a slave owner who slowly realizes the harmful part she plays within the system; Iylea, a seer who gets caught practicing illegal magic; and Threyna, a mysterious woman who is trying to destroy the Skeleton King through evil gods.

Through these many points of view, the readers gets a look into each of the different religions and beliefs that make up the different sides of the oncoming war. Being able to see these perspectives shows the reader how ambiguous the "sides" really are. Multi-POV novels are always interesting to me since you can really see how everyone has what they consider good intentions even if they're going about them the wrong way.

One of my favorite parts about this book was the unique world-building. I have never read a fantasy novel where the main character, Zephyrus, had as little information about the world as I did, and that really gave me a sense of familiarity and helped me bond with and relate to Zephyrus right off the bat in a way I haven't been able to with other main characters in the past.

If you like epic fantasies, gladiators, multi-POV novels, and the Roman Empire, you should definitely check out this novel. It is unique in all the ways that matter with some great plot twists and a killer cliffhanger ending.

Anyone searching for an epic fantasy combining the worldbuilding of GoT, the complex plots and characters of Stormlight Archives, set in the realm of Spartacus, will find themselves enraptured by A Vengeful Realm: The Scales of Balance, by Tim Facciola. Even upon a second read, everything between these covers continues to give on all fronts.

Many authors would be inclined to use memory loss in their main character as a convenient way to provide worldbuilding and context to the reader. Facciola is never one to be convenient with his storytelling, and instead uses this as a vehicle to convey the struggles of navigating a moral compass when all preconceived teachings and memories have been stripped away.

On the note of characters, Tim is well acquainted with those which he creates and often makes his readers question who they should be rooting for. I’ll admit, there was more than one time that I found myself rooting for characters that I shouldn’t, simply because their motivations were so well defined that they became people living within the pages. The storylines rage widely, making it increasingly difficult to select a favorite character.

Worldbuilding within A Vengeful Realm is beautiful and paints the perfect backdrop for the political intrigue, secrets, and a superb god system the entwines with various characters throughout. These elements serve the character’s plots, and not the other way around. It is clear by the end that there is plenty more developed within this world which doesn’t make it on page.

None of this has even touched on the magic within the story. Only hinted at to start, before unfolding and developing profoundly throughout the story, magic has widespread implications across the board for all of the characters. The climax of the book leaves readers craving more, and it is something that I, personally, cannot wait to see explored in more depth. Don’t be surprised when you find yourself cursing Tim for the way he brings this all together in truly epic fashion.

In short, read this book. It has given me a new outlook on fantasy and I cannot wait for the next installment!

I believe this book would be amazing for people who are into epic fantasy for me it's hard to keep up with the different povs, but that doesn't mean the book is bad. The characters are awesome, and the battles definitely are intense. It's still not something I'd normally read, but I liked especially towards the end when things really started to climax. But I think that people who love and enjoy epic fantasy and Rome will absolutely love this novel. Plus, the cover art is just beautiful.

Wait! What? The ending just made my jaw drop! If you love epic fantasy this has to be part of your library. After reading his first book in the A Vengeful Realm trilogy, I put Tim Facciola right up there with Brandon Sanderson and John Gwynn. Yes! This book is that good. It has everything, magic, gods, deception, deceit, murder, war, conflict, false accusations, heroes, gladiators and many other things that make this a great epic fantasy. I don’t want to give away spoilers because you have to experience this without knowing what’s going to happen. At the beginning there is a lot of names and world building being set up and it can be overwhelming but hang in there because the payout is worth it. I can’t wait for book 2. January can’t get here fast enough. I listened to the audiobook. The narrator Landon Soelberg is fantastic. I now have to go get a physical copy. Read this book!

I want to thank NetGalley and First Torch Books, LLC for a free copy of the audiobook. This review is made from my own opinions and voluntarily given.

I listed to the audiobook, and it was simply the best performance ever.
The story is rife with political intrigue, powerful character dynamics, warring gods, and gritty, close-combat. Facciola is a master story teller.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vengeful Realm sets a new standard for fantasy epics

Tim Facciola's epic, the first in a series, is outstanding in several ways. The story line is gripping and holds one's attention to the last page. It is timely as our reality is ravaged by war. The first casualty of war is truth. History repeats itself as is depicted here. The main characters are intertwined masterfully. This is a tale of vengeance, betrayal, espionage, foreboding, fury and torment. The Gods have their own agenda, not dissimilar to the dark forces manipulating humanity for their own ends. Facciola's creativity has been enhanced by superb illustrations. I cannot wait for the next in the series. Highly recommended.
