What Have They Done (An Expat in Europe series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

Expelled from the most prestigious business school in the world, Mason Wright moved to Europe to start a new life where no one knew his past. There he was befriended by an aristocratic crowd, and eventually married the stunningly beautiful, Kelly O’Callaghan - an independent young woman with an equally interesting past.

On the surface Mason and Kelly now appear to be the perfect couple, living in a fashionable neighborhood in Paris and partying with the rich and beautiful in chateaux across France. But darker truths lurk behind the façade. Someone with knowledge of a secret from Mason’s troubled past is targeting their family, threatening everything they hold dear - straining their fledgling marriage. When Mason becomes privy to secret intelligence about a potential attack on Western Europe, he and Kelly disagree on what to do - straining their relationship even further.

Just when it all seems too much to bear, the unthinkable comes to pass - and the young couple find themselves caught in the crosshairs of competing government agencies on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Suddenly, it's no longer a question of trying to save their marriage but one of trying to save their lives.

What Have They Done is a masterpiece of contemporary thriller fiction, a book that grips you from the first page and refuses to let go. Set against the backdrop of a world teetering on the brink of war, Campbell masterfully weaves a narrative that is as much about the internal struggles of his protagonists as it is about the external conflicts shaping the world around them.

Campbell's writing is nothing short of brilliant. With a keen eye for detail and a knack for creating palpable tension, he crafts scenes that are vivid and compelling. The story, set in the all-too-real landscape of global politics in 2023, feels immediate and urgent. The references to real-world events – the tensions over Ukraine, the strife in Israel and Gaza, and the machinations of Putin and Iran – lend an air of authenticity that grounds the narrative in a chilling reality.

The book's protagonists, Mason and Kelly Wright, are rendered with depth and complexity. Campbell deftly explores their personal struggles, from their attempts to keep their marriage afloat amidst personal tragedies to their unwitting entanglement in international espionage. This layering of personal and global stakes is one of the novel's greatest strengths, creating a rich tapestry of narrative threads that are expertly woven together.

The pacing of "What Have They Done" is relentless, driving the reader forward with a sense of urgency that is the hallmark of a great thriller. Campbell's skill in building suspense is evident in every twist and turn of the plot, leading to a climax that is both unexpected and deeply satisfying.

Perhaps most impressive is Campbell's ability to navigate the complex web of international intrigue without ever losing sight of the human element at the heart of the story. The emotional journey of Mason and Kelly is as compelling as the geopolitical drama that unfolds around them, making "What Have They Done" a book that is not just thrilling, but also deeply moving.

In conclusion, Ben Campbell's "What Have They Done" is a triumph of the thriller genre, a book that combines masterful storytelling with a keen understanding of the human heart. It's a riveting, emotionally charged journey that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining – a must-read for anyone who loves a well-crafted thriller that keeps you turning the pages long into the night.

A bit of a slow start for me, but the action ramps up and held me through the final chapter. I felt , though, that the two mostly explicit sex scenes were totally unnecessary and didn’t add to a good story line. But I understand: sex sells. This was actually better than the first in the series. Give it a go.

I came across Vince Flynn years ago, and now I've found Ben Campbell. I already read both books, and I could hardly put them down. Ben is a very talented author, and I'm waiting patiently for a third book.

What I liked most about this book, was its pace, and the fact that it deals with very current topics -- Russia under Putin, the vulnerability of our current dependence on electronics. I highly recommend it.

Just when you thought the authors’ first book couldn’t be topped, here comes the sequel that will keep you on the edge of your seat from cover to cover. I literally could not put the book down. I haven’t been back to Europe in decades, but Campbell’s books have my mind racing and reminiscing of all my past travels. His knowledge of European history and current events are second to none! I hope there are many more sequels to follow. Do yourself a huge favor and order both of his books today and you will thank me later.

I was sick on Christmas Day and decided to start reading this book. Although I should have been trying to rest, I found I couldn't stop reading. Mr. Campbell perfectly crafts an international, action thriller. Although fiction, the events he lays out could actually take place.
